A 2-svt Morning!!!

Guess I'm a total dork for getting excited about this, but today I saw TWO '04 SVTs (not including my own) before lunchtime, both here in Arlington/Rosslyn, Virginia.

One Infra Red ZX3 with HIDs and sunroof while walking to work, and later one Sonic Blue ZX5 with HIDs and sunroof parked outside a coffee shop.

So I'm sitting outside the coffee shop when the owners return to their car from lunch. I say, "Nice SVT!" The driver, a chick - seeming somewhat embarrassed by my attention to their/her car - says, "...thanks." I say, "I've got a silver one." "Oh." "I don't have HIDs, though." They laugh nervously - probably thinking me the total dork that I probably am. (Or maybe they thought I said, "I don't have HIV, though.") The four of them drive off, the melodious exhaust a'bubblin'.

My logic in even bothering to comment is twofold:

(1) They're a fellow Focus Fanatic, or at least realize how cool and rare their car is.

Or...

(2) In the event they're NOT aware how cool and rare (and desirable) their car is, they should be encouraged to realize it. Otherwise, the Focus name continues to be cheapened such that Ford keeps neglecting the car and relegating it to econocar mediocrity, as has been the case since the '05 model year.

Sigh.

it's okay. I've been in the same situations. Just play it by ear. I have a funny feeling that this car will live the life of 240sx, Starions and Sentra SE-R's... unknown until the price drops below 5000. Or... until the government issues a law that cars manufactured after a certain year can't use gasoline...

The only driver that smiled and knew what he got was a mid aged man. He couldn't stop smiling when I passed him up.

I've had that happen with my SHO and SVT Contour, but not the Focus... most of the SVT Foci running around here are beat to shit or riced-out. it's sad, really.

Wow - that IS sad. Every SVT I ever see in the flesh is nice - the only beat-up or riced-out ones I see are on the internet...

Ah, the SE-R. I had the original (and best) SE-R. Black 1991 model; my first brand-new car, bought right off the showroom floor. Real sleeper car. I chose it over a new BMW 318is. Never liked a car better until I got my Infra Red 2001 ZX3... (although the SE-R had superior seats and maybe a better gearbox).

It's SHOCKING to see one now - they always look like complete crap. I hope I'VE aged better in the past 16 years! (I know mine got totalled by the second owner - a friend - so at least I've done better than IT did...)

Even sadder: she probably thought you were just trying to hit on her, and not showing genuine interest in her car (I'm not saying whether or not you were hitting, too...).

This is true of the 2nd generation Escort GT as well. I've been wanting to pick one up in good condition but they've all been beaten to hell or ghettoed up really bad. Those still on the road in good shape aren't being put up for sale 'cuz the owner knows what he has. Shameful ending for a fun car.

God, I hope not - MAYBE if they bought it used form Carmax or something (where they don't even bother to put premium in for your "free" tank of gas, and you get to drive your "new" SVTF home with the "check engine" light on - mind you, that's not where I bought mine, but I know).

As for my story, I actually see quite a fair share of SVTFs (maybe one every two weeks) here around Arlington and Alexandria. It's just unusual to see two within such a short span of time (3 hours); within a 1/4 mile of each other; and both while on FOOT. And, believe me, I'm observant as hell - if an SVTF passes - or is passed - anywhere within my line of vision, I SEE it. (An obsession I developed over the five years they were existing prior to my finally owning one...)
