Angry I got my first ticket

hello fellow focus fanatics
so i was driving to school early this morning and sure enough got pulled over and cited for speeding. The sheriff (not state highway patrolman) was very nice and i did everything to be as polite as possible. But still got a ticket for 74mph in a 55mph zone. I live in Ohio and am 16 years old, i was just wondering what to expect from the judge. If anyone has any experience i would love to know. thanks

I didn't start driving until I was 18 so I never got ticketed while I was a minor. I want to say that you'll have to go to court and they may suspend your license...I can't recall what the Ohio state law says concerning minors and traffic citations but I think they're pretty strict.

From what it seems I think he actually let you off with a break, 74 in a 55 is JUST under the wreckless driving ticket range (20mph or over) go to court ask for driving school and keep it off your insurance as for your points on your license you will just have to bite the bullet and slow down to get anymore taken off.

Getting cited for anything in ohio really sucks if your under 18. expect to have your license taken away for about 4 weeks. And attend a class to mkae you feel like a douche bag. Seriously they brought in parents of kids who got killed by drunk drivers and basicaly yelled at us. And there I was sitting there after dinging a guys door with my old car when I was 16. Logical? I think not.

After re reading my post it sounds a little heartless. There were alot of kids that did deserve to be at the class. But for someone who was speeding or doing something as minor as dinging a door, and mkaing them go to this thing is just horrible.

In Ohio, taking driving school doesn't keep the points off your license, it just adds two to your limit (so if you get a ticket and take the class you'll have 2 points on your license with 14 total instead of 2 points with 12 total.) Your insurance company will still find out about it...traffic school is more to keep you from getting your license suspended than to clean up your record. Now if you ask the magistrate they may reduce the fine or drop it entirely and just have you pay court costs (about 80% of what you'd have to pay anyways.)

Courtsey of Ohio BMV:

Quote:
If a probationary driver license holder under the age of 17 is convicted of having committed one moving violation during the first six months of having a driver's license, the person must be accompanied by a parent or guardian whenever operating a motor vehicle during the six-month period commencing on the date on which the person is convicted of or pleads guilty to the moving violation or until the person turns 17.
"Porbationary driver license" is what any minor gets, so that will apply to you. Read more here: http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/driver_license/new_gdl_info.htm

Thats what i figured. Alot of my friends have had there liscences suspended but they get to drive to work and school still. i really would like to keep my driving to school priveledges. From what i've heard, alot of it just depends on wether or not the judge woke up on the right side of the bed. i think the worst thing about this whole experience was having to tell my dad. I just feel stupid for being so irresponsible.

P.S. i'm also a little P*ss*d that i got a ticket. I mean i was polite to the officer and even said something about being late to school. But i can't blame anyone but myself.

74 in a 55?!??!?!?

Cross your fingers that the judge goes easy on you... you are REAL close to the wreckless driving charge.. but like someone else said, I think that's 20mph over the limit....

Its a good thing you did everything you could to be as nice and polite as possible.
