05 zx4 ST Testdrive - My Impressions

i have been asked to share my impressions from my testdrive, so here you go:

Well, monday was my day off, so i decided to call around denver to see if the 05s had hit the lots yet. sure enough, there was one dealership on the west side of town with an st on the lot. so, i make the 30 minute commute to take a look at it.

I must say, i was unimpressed with the styling from the ford promotional photos i had seen. but seeing it in person was like looking at a completly differnt car. i encourage all of you to at the very least see one in person before you pass your judgment.

So, i am talking with the salesman about the differances between the new and the old. and there was an awkward pause, which he breaks by saying, "you wanna take it for a spin?" I say, of course, and i must be grinning from ear to ear.

so, we take it off the lot, and traffic is kind of heavy because it is the tail end of rush hour. i could not push it as hard as i would have liked.

the thing was quick, with very nice acceleration from a stop. (not mustang eater acceleration, of course, but enough to spin the tires, if that is your deisre) the problem i had with accelerating is that the first couple of gears seemed a little short. if you held a gear to higher rpms there was pretty dramatic power loss. then after i quickly shifted through the frist 2 gears, the next 2 seemed a little longer then they should have been. acceleration through these gears seemed a little slow. (of course, this may have been effected by the fact that the car was not broken in, i do not know)

the handeling was awesome. i did get to push the car through a few twisties, and it responded very well. the handaling seemed very precise. i think it would be a downgrade from an svt (though i have not driven one) but an upgrade from the rest of the stock foci. it also had a smooth ride over some bumpy roads.

i did not get a chance to take it up to higher speeds. fastest i was able to go was about 50. but it was smooth, and secure feeling there, and i do not doubt it would feel the same at higher speeds.

so there you go. that is my impressions. i encourage you to take a look for yourself. it was worth the trip for me.

Thanks, Urn... I hope other people find the post interesting too! I will hopefully get down to see one in the next couple weeks, and if I go at a lull in the business day maybe I'll ask to drive it a bit too, I am interested to see the new offering even though my car's going nowhere.

Thanks for the write up Urn, I passed an ST on the Highway the other day and from behind its a definate improvement IMO, but the front needs a huge change IMO.

i actually really like the new front, that is my favorite change. it has more of a japanese import look instead of the european look, but it also seems a bit more agressive, especially the lower grill and fog lights.

if you ever get a chance, look at the front of an 04 and the 05 sitting next to each other. there is a big differance, and a big improvment, IMO.

if i remember correctly, it has components from the svt suspension (or similar to), but it is not the exact same thing. (someone please correct me if i am wrong) ford simply describes it as "European Inspired Suspension Includes: Independent Front Suspension MacPherson Struts, Front Stabilizer Bar, Control Blade Independent Rear Suspension" and "Performance Tuned suspension with rear stabilizer bar"

also, since this is a sedan, and not a hatch, the handeling would be differnt.
