Fuel Economy on 2003 Focus

Hey, What's sup..just bought a brand new 2003 Focus ZX5 Comfort. I was wondering what everyone else was getting for gas mileage. I have a 4 speed auto and are getting about 28-29 on the highway. I love the car which was better than my 2003 Cavalier (5M) but I was getting about 34 miles..what gives (besides the obvious automatic)..Is the tank on the Focus smaller? Any relplies would be helpful..thanks.. ps. All driving is on the highway..

The Zetec or SPI engines I think are 12 gallons, the 2.3L has 14.1. Check your manual to be sure... if you're calculating fuel economy as Miles driven/Gallons used then it really shouldn't matter though- it would only affect the actual number displayed on your cluster if the Cavy had a bigger tank.

Thanks for the reply, I will check on that today. I know that the Cav has a 14 gallon tank and I was used to filling in up every 3 1/2 days but now I'm filling it upevery 2 1/2 days..Just a little picky on the milelage thang..Even here in the sticks of Illinois gas is 1.97..thanks

i am getting between 34-37mpg on my 03 focus. but i have the SPI engine. you should have either the pzev or the zetec. which do not get as good of gas milage. (though i do not have numbers off hand)

the other reason your numbers may be lower then you would like is that you like the car so much you drive it harder. the fact that it has not been broken in may effect mpg also. i know that my gas milage has gone up since i first started driving.

just out of curiosity. how were you able to buy a brand new 03 recently? i know dearlerships around here have not had them in quite some time.

Someone ordered a 03 but changed their minds. Just for taking it off their hands..I got a 75,000 miles extended warranty, plus 5/100,000 powertrain..The car had about 400 miles on it..(maybe not tech. new) but..should the engine be broken it by now? I don't drive it hard and I keep it around 60 on a two lane road. I do drive 100 miles a day..though..maybe the sticker was right..just a little curious since gas in the sticks of Illinois are almost $2 a gallon.

I just got 35mpg with my 02 ZTW auto. My commute is almost all highway. I really milked it to see what I would get since switching to 1 step colder sparkplugs. I also had a fresh mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 oild change as well. I drove like the car was gonna break...easy on the drivetrain if you know what i mean. Just a couple of passing gear events, and nothing run out either. Since I commute a total of 108 miles a day, I've done this before. The best i could get was 32mpg. Brand new, the car sucked gas...but I've got some efficient mods done, and now at 42K, and some abuse, she's shall we say loosened up quite a bit.
Bottom line is, the plugs are working. Now I want a hotter coil.....

I average around 25mpg, But 1/2 of which is highway, and the rest is zipping through town. Just filled up today "in the sticks of IL" 1.98 for regular gas needs to go back down.. I usually fill up once a week.

I average around 30 with a high of 36 with my all stock '03 ZTW. As far as breaking it in my mileage was still improving with thousands of miles on it.

How do you pull 30mpg? I have a 2002 ZTS, I get 25 in mixed driving (about 2/3 city, 1/3 hwy).
