Unhappy Turn Indicator problem

Well isn't this just typical... less than a hundred kms after the warranty from the used car dealer ran out, I noticed that my turn indicators aren't self-cancelling anymore after a turn. I'm only at 65500 kms (41000mi).

A couple of questions: Has anyone else had this happen? Is it necessary to remove the steering wheel to replace the control stalk? Has anyone removed the steering wheel on their Focus? (I've removed a wheel to replace a wiper stalk on an Integra... but that one didn't have an airbag... which is my main concern about removing the wheel on the Focus.)

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

if it comes to removing the stalk, i believe they just come out by lifting up on the top of the steering wheel cover behind the wheel, then they should pull out from there, have you checked all the realys and such yet?

I just figured that out at lunch... neat, no tools required and the thing just slides right out. Well at least the expensive bit isn't busted, the switch unit itself looks fine. However there is a plastic ring behind the steering wheel that has about an inch of the flange broken off, this is the part that trips the cancel lever on the switch. Hopefully just the ring is available, it looks cheap. So I still need info from anyone that's taken off their airbag equiped steering wheel, it would be an expensive mistake to set the thing off!

hmmm... car mods or new kiteboarding equipment... NO CONTEST! If you're looking for me, I'm out on the lake! Only thing I've changed on the car is add proper load bars on the rack (to carry kiteboards and other such toys) and changed the two front interior door panel inserts to red ones (eventually I'll find time to do the other two!). To be honest I bought the thing in July, stopped at the local Wal-mart on the way home to get a new wash mitt, soap, and wax... and I still haven't washed it... not even once!

I'm wondering why I got downgraded to rookie. Is it 'cus I haven't posted in a while???

P.S. The kids have trampled the animal print Kleenex box a couple of times, so it's not looking so sharp anymore.

we switched boards a couple months back, so post counts got reset.
ask one of the admins, they might be able to fix it for you

My girlfriend's Focus is having the same problem. Evertime she turns the indicators stay on and you have to shut them off manually. Anybody have any suggestions?

I read in another thread that there is a plastic ring inside the steering colum that trips the switch off as the wheel turns. If that cracks or gets damaged it wont trip off the switch.

Can someone link me to that thread? I've tried searching and keep coming back to this thread. Thanks!

If the part to fix it is too expensive, you could always yank one out of a wrecked focus.
