Why is the VW GTI so porky?

The VW GTI weighs somewhere about 3100-3250 lbs. That's about 600-700 lbs more than my bare bones [except A.C.] 2000 ZX3. The 2 cars look similar at first glance. I know it has turbo and intercooler, but where does all the extra weight come from? That's a huge difference.

You'll find that most of the fast compacts are pretty heavy...the STi tips the scales at 3500 because of its ability to have a pickup truck dropped onto it from 30' above and not have the chassis collapse at all.

not all german cars are heavy pigs though, my 914 weighs a little bit lest then 2000lbs and it is very solid, the GTI and most modern cars are heavvier do to stupid safety equipment: airbags, crumple zones, and some good saftey equipment like echancented body shells

There are almost no light cars anymore. There are a few exceptions, but most cars today are serious PIGS. The HP is there so they just ignore the weight. My goodness, look at the new Gt500 mustang, can you imagine if it weighed 3300 pounds like it should?
I am into racing motorcycles so weight is everything. It is amazing how much difference it can make, even moreso in cars. Many people will say it doesn't matter much. Have you ever driven a 2,000 pound car? Its impressive, especially in the turns.
Where does the weight come from? Good question. Some of it is necessary, safety zones, "frames" that are safer and stronger. Now for the junk. Comfort is alot of it, power window, power seats ( ever pull one of these out? HEAVY) AC ( the whole system is over 100 pounds). Emissions junk, ABS systems are huge and heavy ( and on a light car not needed), sound deadening panels can add up too a lot of weight, too. If you have never stripped a street car down for a race vehicle it is an amazing experience. They hide SO MUCH stuff everywhere ( up in fender wells) on new cars it would make you sick.

yeah, most new cars or new versions of cars keep getting porkier... when it should be the other way around. everybody is so worried about gas mileage... guess what, weight is the enemy of gas mileage!! at least there are a few exceptions... the new 08 focus is actually gonna be lighter than the current one (plus uglier... and weak) and the Fiesta is supposed to be lighter than the outgoing UK version. so there is some hope

Probably all the useless stuff, GPS,Heated leather seats, I think the interior material is heavier than the engine itself. Did they not know how to make an aluminum block?

They must of adapted to united states standards of overweight people and blonde skanks with cell phones.

I got my Focus without AC or any power goodies to cut down on the weight. More gas mileage!
