Exclamation insurance question

Well we all know that insurance for a Kia would be cheaper than a Subaru WRX STI.

How do they create quotes for each car? Is it based on HP. Some cars just have more insurance becasue their more performance orientated?

Just curious.

Not on hp. more how safe the car is. i was quoted 166 a month on a SRT 4 and i pay 233 a month for my focus. the srt is cheaper cause it has better saftey features that my car.

safety features and also value of the car your buying ... if you total a ferrari they have big payouts to make but if you total a kia its not as large.. got to look at it in your point of view.

fleawannabe your insurance is almost like mine lol
I was paying 290 a month and this year it dropped by half to 150 a month, I had a speeding ticket for doing 100 in a 50 whats your excuse? lol

We have a user on here 'Carrera26', he sold the SVT and got an RX-8, so he's not around too much anymore, but he also worked in automotive insurance, he'd be able to answer this question pretty well.

As far as I know, insurance companies have risk classifications for different vehicles. This is not based on any one thing, and certainly not just advertised horsepower. I have to believe the major determining factor is the total average insurance payout per vehicle in each age bracket. For example, Miatas are cheap to insure, even though they are 2 door 2 seaters with a drivetrain that makes them tricky or dangerous to drive in bad weather. They also have no fixed roof, which makes them an easy target for vandalism and theft. However, their owner base is largely comprised of lower-risk people, and because of the demographic-driven trends they tend to be cheap for insurers to pay for, and therefor they can be cheaper to insure.

Take as another example the 80s and 90's F-bodies (Camaro/Firebird), which for at least a few years had the highest number of rollovers average per vehicle, despite their proportions making them pretty tricky to get wrong-side-up. This wasnt specifically because the Camaro was innately a death machine, or even specifically because you could get them with a Chevy smallblock, but mostly because people tended to get them and hammer on them. Because there were more incidents that ended up costing insurers money, they have a motivation to make up for this cost by charging the owner base more on average. I suspect much the same factor is what makes cars like SRT-4's and WRX's expensive for certain age brackets.

In short, there's probably a lot that goes into it, and unless you're involved in the business I doubt you'll know what it all is.

i pay 88 a month. basic coverage. nothing more. its fine by me.

my car is also paid off...that helps

ive heard something about teirs...like a 350z is a tier 4 car, and a g35 is a tier 5 car...its based on value of the car as well...which only makes sense. cost to fix. liability of someone to get in an accident.
