Add side airbags

Anyone ever looked into adding them after the fact.

Do you need a new computer in addition to the air bags and wiring.

I just want my wagon and didn't think there was a chance of buying/finding one with air bags. Also too bad the ABS isn't available on the wagon...

Would be whiling to spend maybe as much as $1500...

Thoughts?

I wouldn't bother...then again, I view airbags with a certain distaste (along with EFI, ABS, plastic interiors, etc...not completely sure why I own a car that goes against everything I like!).

I don't know that you'd need a new computer, but you'd have to get seats with the bags in them, and snag the wiring harnesses, then figure out there to splice them or plug them in. And I don't know that the seats would match the rest, so it may or may not look a tad bit awkward...

I would do the water proof wet okole seat cover that are side airbag certified so the color would be unimportant. I might even consider having the ford dealer do the work. I just wanna know if you guys think it is possible.

Anything is possible, it's just a question of time, money and hard work. Cars these days are all made modular, so you can hook any option up. Something like airbags would be difficult, for the reasons already listed. You'd probably be better off selling your car and buying one with airbags. You could probably do the switch for the cost of the tags, which will be hundreds or maybe even thousands less than the airbag switch.

Indeed U have to do alot of wiring for the side airbags, But inlike me I wouldn't partucually car about it at all. So my Focus doesn't come with side bag.... It seems like the world right now, they act like they can't live without it.

I believe that side airbag would be a decent useage in the most drooling weathers like the ice, where anyone can side swipe a pole or something.

Take that $1500 and buy rims and good tires, or a roll cage if you are that paranoid about people hitting you or have a habit of pulling out and not looking before you do. Don't waste your money on more airbags, the ones in the dash are more than enough.
Plus side air bags are not gonna save you if a nice sharp piece of the the hood or bumper comes flying through the window. You'll still go home in a bag.

Seriously though, just buy some upgrade handling parts you'll be better off.

Fron NHTSA: "Side-impact crashes are the second most common fatal type after frontal crashes, killing 9,200 people in 2005. The percentage of fatalities caused by side-impact crashes is on the rise -- from 31 percent in 1980-81 to 49 percent in 2004-05.... Also, Lund said, "growing sales of SUVs and pickups have exacerbated height mismatches among passenger vehicles, thereby increasing the risks to occupants of many vehicles struck in the side." Therefore, if youu're going to mix it up with Dodge Rams out there on the roads, you need some protection.

Side-impact crashes typically result from red-light running, or missing sight of them entirely. They may be the hardest kind of accident for the driver who didn't make the mistake to avoid. Even an added roll cage would help little if you weren't wearing a crash helmet, like a real race driver.

I've gone shopping for a Focus twice, and always chose another car (a Golf & a Forester) when I found how rare side air bags and ABS are in the Focus line. It's been there on the options list for ages, but what gets sold seems to be only cheap, stripped-down models designed to deliver the lowest monthly payment. I respect and admire the Focus as the best US small car by far. When wil Ford start respecting the Focus customer? Maybe that's changing- last year, Ford seemed to be routinely installing the "safety package" and rebating the $600 cost.

I've come to expect plenty of adolescent bravado when I drop by this forum, but some of these comments really take the cake.

Here's the other rub to the side impact air bags in the focus. Yes, they're horrifically uncommon. (our local dealer only seems to order foci w/safety package and pzev emissions - so mine's a safety pkg equippede pzev) The biggest rub is this - they only protect your torso (seat mounted) - so your head protection is limited in a side impact)

In the vw rabbit/jetta, honda civic, and some other competitive models - torso and head airbags are standard. Next time I go shopping for a car - I think I'll go for the rabbit - it's better equipped (bone stock) vs a mid level focus, is better thought out, and seems to be the better car.
