Honestly for the first time. Sit with the car running in neutral and just press the clutch in a few times to feel when it grabs once you get used to this point you'll know when you have to give more gas etc...

Shifting is easy. Work on getting the car rolling first. You should have it down good enough to drive on roads at the end of this weekend.

Here's how I've taught it.

1) Throttle Control:

Put it in neutral and pull up the e-brake. Spend about 10 minutes practicing putting your foot on the gas and reving to about 2500rpms and holding it there. When you can put your foot on the gas rev up to 2500 and hold it pretty easily without it flying off the handle, you're ready.

2) Starting Off:

Put it in first and take off the e-brake. Now rev up to 2500 and start to let the clutch out SLOWLY. As soon as you feel it start to grab and roll forward hold it there and give it a little gas. Once you get rolling (about 5-10mph) roll onto the throttle gently as you let the clutch out to accelerate. Put it back in and come to a stop. Do this repeatedly until you feel comfortable with it.

(If you let the clutch out too fast it will jerk violently until you put it back in or the car stalls. You either need to ride it longer when it first starts to grab or give it a little more gas as you're letting it out.)

3) Second Gear:

Start off like in #2 and as you reach about 3-4krpms (with the clutch fully out), put the clutch in, move the lever to second and ride the clutch a tiny bit (not as much as first) as you give it more gas.

4) Down Shifting:

About the best way I can explain this is to pop the gas fast and hard as you're moving the shifter to a lower gear and ride the clutch a little bit as you let it out. You'll figure it out as you learn.

That's about all there is to it. 3, 4 and 5 don't really require any clutch riding at all, just clutch in, shift, clutch out. When ever you're slowing down to turn at an intersection or really any turn under say 30mph but you're not going to stop, put it in second. The only time you need 1st gear is when you're at a complete stop.

Good luck!
