Question Would you ditch your spare tire?

I just did, along with the jack and wrench. Saves about 25-30 lbs and extra space available. [that's where the battery should be]. I think it's worth the risk. If I get a flat I'll just call a tow truck. How often do you get a flat anyway? Use good tires or the run flat type.

Anybody got any other weight savings tips? How much lighter are the optima batteries?

Well id might consider the fact that calling a tow truck just to have a temp tire is consider to be a waste of money and time, it's really an unnecessary thing to do.

+25-30 pounds is nothing an U won't see any advantage by drag resistance except for the fact that u have 25-30 pounds less.

But it's totally up to U.
As for the optima batterys I don't know about it being light, I never bought one. Although a optima is a good battery to have, it a maintanence free battery; but judging by the weight of one vs a regular battery... is about the same weight no more and no less.

just removing the tire wont really do anything. techincally yes you will show gains in MPG but they will be very small. its not worth it. if you get a flat you have to sit there and wait for a tow.

now if you talking about autox or drag or any other kind of racing then yes take it out along with everything else you can.

Remove it at the track or for a competition use, but to have it out for day to day use is just way to impractical... I"ll just call a tow-truck?! Way to make yourself helpless in society.

I have the back seats, seat belts, and spare out. I just keep a cell phone on me , and if I get a flat, have a friend go get my spare. I usually don't drive the focus far, I would normally take the GTI for long trips.

COME ON GUYS!!!! Way to make yourself helpless.. I have friends that have waited over 3 hours for AAA to show. The cell phone generation just blows me away.

You are considering ditching a spare tire that ways 30-40 pounds, and can get you out of a jam (flat tires suck) to get WHAT? You are looking for a faster car or better MPG in a 4cyl econocar ( yes a nice one that I like, too )
. Give me a break, this is udderly ridiculous. Kfokus has it right. If you are doing an autoX or a drag strip night, sure take it out and set it aside. BUT, for day to day use to make myself helpless on the side of the road with a flat tire? Oh, thats right I can use my CELL PHONE to call someone ELSE to make them come fix my tire or tow me??? ONLY AMERICANS CAN BE SO LAZY. BE self-sufficient for petes sake. What a ridiculous attitude, I'm sorry but there is NO WAY I would sit and wait for someone else to come help me, a grown man; to change my flat tire.

Yeah, the spare came out a long time ago. Not for some miniscule performance gain, but for emergency supplies and accessories that now fit easily into the tire well, all nicely out of sight under the floor in the wagon. Still room left over if I want to stash my spendy camera in there.
If was driving on near-baldies (I don't do that anymore) then I wouldn't leave home without a spare. If the worst still happens anyway, help is a cellphone call away.
