VIN Laws In AZ

Anyone know whether or not it's legal to cover your VIN in Arizona? I just don't like the idea of it just sitting there in the dash where anybody walking by could write it down.

Now, I know that the worst that can happen is that a clone of my car would be created, and that I would have the title and registration to prove mine is the real deal in that case, but I was curious nonetheless.

I'm at work, so if I can't get back to this tread today, thanks in advance!

Nothing illegal I would think. I don't worry about my VIN though, no one can do anything with you VIN.

Auto Locksmiths can use VIN'# to find the key to your car. Was once a big thing in Houston about Tow truck drivers and Smith's stealing cars.

I went on AZ DOT site and didn't see any reference of it being illegal to cover up your VIN. Some states actually allow you to cover up your VIN as long as it remains in tact.

Focus keys, (and most other Ford keys) must now be programmed to start your car. If you don't have two programmed keys, a Ford dealer must program the key. However, the unprogrammed key will still unlock the car doors and the hatch/trunk.

I work in Repossessions.. according to most Police Depts i have dealt with.. it is illegal to cover the VIN plate. They need to be able to run info on the car and find out certain things.. (cant remember em all). But most places require proof that the vehicle is yours before they cut the keys and all. So unless you havent paid your car bill.. you shouldnt have to cover your VIN plate for any reason.

almost... you can also program the key if you know the sequence. As far as the "chip" goes....its just a fixed resistor and if you have a varible resistor and a DMM you can steal any "chipped" car. But I NEVER SAID THAT.
You can also start the car from under the hood by cutting out the grill with bolt cutters and touching this to that a couple times. If your worried try an alarm with an extra channel, then hook up a relay to your fuel solenoid.
I personally installed a 140 dB@1k Hz siren and a 160 watt strobe light in the overhead light container. I figure the thief messing with my car is dumb, so I might as well finish of the blind, and deaf part for them. And you CAN cover your VIN in ANY state as long as it is intact and unaltered by the cover.

I specialize in car A/V and Security systems
