An engine block heater may not be a bad idea...

Just saw this pic on another website.

This is by far the worst ice storm results I've ever seen.

What do you guys up north do in a situation like this?

Last winter when I was at college we had an ice storm come through and it froze to the passenger side of my trooper (switched with the focus because of bad weather) in about 1/2" of ice, but I just started her up, turned on the defroster and it melted off in about 5 min, at least to the point you could chip the windows clear and open the door.

But I don't have a clue what you'd do in a situation like this (not that I have to worry about it in Texas) and I'm curious to hear about the peferred method of dethawing by the guys up north. What do you guys do, or what would you do if you came out the front door and your car was covered in 3" of ice?

One time, down in Blacksburg, we had an ice storm that completely froze a car shut, which we neede to get into to find a cell phone. Luckily, I was able to get into my trunk to get a can of de-icer. I used the entire bottle on the seems of the door before finally being able to break it open.

Of course the phone was in the house the entire time.

go get a large kettle of hot water, it'll melt the ice off and as long as it not still cold, it wont refreeze. I'll do this if i dont wanna spend time scraping the front window, it takes like 2 seconds to melt. Even regular cool tap water will work to some extent if its not that cold.

I was just curious because like I said, I used the defroster and that did good enough to melt it to where I pretty much chipped a slot in the ice and then just peeled it off the windows, but it seems a situation like in that picture or atleast 3/4"-1" of ice covering the whole vehicle that most conventional methods would take forever to get you car to the point of being able to drive and see. Maybe I'm just underestimating the power of hot water?

If I lived up north and come outside and saw that I would stop, turn around, go back inside, and go back to sleep.
