I stay away from "cheap gas" at ALL costs... there really is a difference.

well around here there is only 3-4 suppliers that deliver to all the stations in town. So cheap vs expensive is not applicable here. I bet in other areas too.

But they only said that they tested for sediments, diesel contamination and octane level. You'd have to have a pretty crappy gas station if you were getting diesel mixed in with your gas.

Yes, all the gas basically comes from the same place, but additives are included at the station which help clean the engine and help the fuel burn more completely. So in most cases, buying the premium gas does get you better fuel.

and am I the only one that LOLled at the news guy at the end when he said "duuuhhh so is there anyone that should be buying premium fuel?" Yes newsguy, people whose cars take premium should buy it...

Putting premium gas in a car that isn't designed for it is a waste of money. The "premium" label only refers to the octane rating of the gas, NOT the quality. Burning a higher octane of gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no performance benefits, and the gas is not cleaner by any means.

As far as buying one particular brand of gas. According to a snopes article, oil companies routinely buy and sell each others gasoline depending on market trends and the stations own individual needs. In other words... you could be filling up at a Shell station with Citgo gas, or vice versa.

Pretty much all gasolines have detergents and cleaners added. This is from about.com:

"One common misconception is that higher octane gasoline contains more cleaning additives than lower octane gas. All octane grades of all brands of gasoline contain engine cleaning detergent additives to protect against engine deposit build-up. In fact, using a gasoline with too high of an octane rating may cause damage to the emissions system."

I think a lot of marketing has been done by the gas companies to push premium on people, but the truth is that premium gasoline, unless you have your engine specifically tuned for it, offers no advantages whatsoever. It's just marketing hype.
