car crash, 3rd focus in one year?

Almost a year ago I bought an 06 zx4, but my insurance was high and I really started liking the older hatchbacks. So I decided to trade in for an 03 zx3. I cut my insurance in half, and had what I felt is a better car.

Yesterday I was driving my friend to his house, and he lives in a town with loopy curved roads. I was going through a narrow "S" shaped bend when half way through it my hand slipped off the wheel, I lost control of the car, and slammed it hard over a 1 1/2 foot curb. The car hit, then jumped in the air for a moment and came down hard off the curb.

Immediately after the car was making a horrible violent grinding noise so I turned it off, and went outside to inspect the damage. The wheel was broke, there were bearings everywhere, looked like the axle broke, everything I could see was bent, there was extensive body damage, and I'm sure all sorts of other things I couldn't see.

I called a tow truck (which took two hours to find me, because the town is so confusing ). When the truck finally got there we tried to push the car into a better position to get it on the truck, because the car was sitting in a tight space, and he had a huge flatbed. The car wouldn't budge. After some careful maneuvering he finally got the car hooked to the truck.

Now it's just sitting at the shop, and I'll find out what happens with it tomorrow. Judging by what I saw I think the car is totaled, and even if it's somehow not I'm just gonna buy a new car anyway.

So should I get another focus? I'm thinking about finding one with the 2.3, or maybe looking into another car completely. I'm going used, and I want my limit to be $14,000, it can't have too much power for insurance reasons. What cars would everyone recommend?

I think a 2.3 is a great way to go. Before I bought my car, I really didn't know about them. I can't find one here anyway, but you should be able to.

Insurance will be worse now with a new accident.. sorry to say.

The 03-04 PZEV is what you should look for, it's a sleeper to insurance companies due to it's low emissions rating.

Maybe you should consider an old Dodge 100, circa 1964 or so, flathead six, gets about 10 mpg, goes about 60 mph top speed. Insurance should be cheap, cost will be cheap too!! No shoulder belts, and the dash is metal though, so you'll want to be sure not to get too crazy.

IMO the 2.3 Focus is the best Focus you can buy, it offers the best value per dollar.

Though, for your budget, you could get a fairly nice five speed brand new focus. A nicely equipped focus with rebates and all is going to be in the $13-$14k range. Whether you buy a new focus or a used focus, you're not going to see much difference in insurance. If you want cheap insurance on something recent - check out a Ford Taurus - not exciting, but cheap to insure.

Your insurance is going to be high on anything that you'll be carrying comp/collision on, so it might make more sense to suck it up and buy something cash and lay low without comp/coll. I'd suggest an old Volvo (anything pre 1993 with the four cylinder is your best bet) for under $1000 and have everything but comp/coll. It won't be fast, pretty or anything, but you won't get into much trouble with it. Save up those car payment and extra insurance premium dollars, and you can get yourself anything you want three years down the road. - You'll have a decent chunk of money saved up ($200x36 months = 7200 in car payments easy, $100x36 months = 3600 in insurance savings easily 7300+3600 = $10800 after three years), enough to put a sizeable downpayment on the flashy new Skyline, Camaro, WRX, or whatever catches your fancy, or to buy something nice preowned cash.

(If something happened to my focus along these lines, this is that path I'd take)
