Red face Car rescue, a.k.a "cars in barns"

Helped a local board member by trailering a car he picked up for an incredibly cheap price (how cheap I am not at liberty to say but lets just say that it is a days work). If he did not take it that night it was going to the scrapyard. I get there and it is a 1996 Taurus SHO which hasn't moved since Janyary of 2006 and leaks copious amounts of transmission fluid and doesn't go over 30 mph, hence why I was trailering it for him. Fluid leak appears to be from cooling lines.

The engine had the cam(s) spin, which unfortunately is common on these cars unless you get them welded but the engine in it was a replacement and when he started it there was zero smoke, but it did shuck the accessory belt.

Interior was damned near mint. Came with BBS wheels with new Blizzaks on them along with the stock wheels/tires.

Anyway, here are some pics. Besides rebuilding the tranny and a serious buffing, the car is in great shape, would have been a shame to scrap.

Man, car looks great. I've heard mixed things about the Yama-ford V8 in those, but I imagine it could be made into a killer sleeper. Makes a good story too.

The V8 in the DN101 SHO was a Yamaha variant of the duratec motors. It was essentially a duratec V6 with an extra 2 cylinders grafted on and some extra work. Very neat car. If memory serves me correct, a later revision of this motor is now being used in the new Volvo V8 line. Very neat cars. Funny thing is that the 96-99 SHO almost never happened.

I'd say that in another 10-15 years, any SHO will be a pretty hot collector's item. It's an overlooked gem of Ford's old product line. Hmmmm, an 89-95 SHO may be easier to talk my wife into letting me buy as a fixer upper than a BMW, while still fun.

Beautiful car. Best of luck with bringing her back. It looks great, and I envy your buddy already. The SHO's were probably one of the coolest cars Ford ever did. It's a shame that Ford killed off the SHO with the update in 2000.

Just once, just once, I WANT TO BE THE GUY WHO FINDS A COOL CAR IN A DUSTY BARN !!!

No lie, it seems like everyone I know has found a cool car - that runs - and paid peanuts for it.

My friend Matthew found an early 60's (I forget the year) Morris Minor (read here Mini) with right hand drive, original paint, and ONLY 34,000 miles on the ODO.

A wash job, a good coat of wax and some very minor mechanical fixes he sold it for almost $18K. He paid...$100 for it.

Just wonder when it will be my turn.... *sigh*

P.S. Way off topic - Lil PZEV my Beardie is 6 years old and is the coolest pet. I can put you in touch with a good breeder if you are interested.

This guy paid $200 for the car. Certainly isn't worth $18k but still a good investment.

Absolutely! Hats off to him/you for the find! The wheels alone are worth more than $200
