new to the focus world

hey guys my name's Dave. i just bought my first Focus today actually. its a 2005 ST 4-DR sedan. not the type of car i'd generally be excited about but it definatly surprised me and i'm pretty hard to please. i've spent hours looking at performance parts and examining my engine bay trying to get some ideas and i have two main questions right now. first of all, i dont know the difference between the duratec and zetec engines. i've got NO expereience with these cars. all i know is my engine is a 2.3 litre and like i said is the ST manual transmission model. if someone could tell me what exactly i have it would make it way easier for me to look up parts.

the other question is i was taking off my air box to see how its assembled to start modifying my air intake. when i did so, i noticed a rectangular piece in the tubing below where the airbox sits, i was wondering what exactly that was, and if it would be impossible to create my own intake or if i'd have to spend 300$ for an aftermarket one because of this mystery piece.

thanks for the help guys. im looking forward to getting my focus ready for the spring

ok, you do have ther 2.3 duratec as they got rid of the zetec starting in 05. You have 151 horses and 154 torque. liter and a 5 spd mtx 75 transmoission. The air intake is highly restrictive and like 6 feet long. FOr around $150, you can buy a marcy motorsport CAI or a focus sport intake and get close to 10 wheel horsepower or something ridiculous. I also love the focus sport exhasut. The duratec responds very well to bolt ons. For your long throw stock shifter, look into the ford racing or steeda shifter. Yeah but getting back to the intake, it is a non servicable air filter good for close to 100,000 miles but cost like 300 to replcace at that point. Oh, and get a drop, some tint and some 17's and it will look sweet and perform somewhat well.

welcome to hell bro! this is the place to learn as well as argue! ha ha. we also joke around alot here. first off ,that car you bought is the way to go. the st's have MANY options(cosworth mainly). youll learn, especially from some of your fellow outspoken members.......and just to give you a resopnse, get rid of that stock air intake. MANY to choose from. just give price , the threat of hydrolocking and performance in mind when shopping and asking around.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the zetec was dropped when the duratec was introduced in 03. Great buy BTW! The 2.3 Focus is the only Focus I would purchase
