see, actually the key is to keep the rpm's consistently varying. I've read somewhere that 80 or 90 percent of your breakin is within the first 100 miles. There are so many differing theories on the breakin period and how to properly do it. Some theories say baby the car, others say romp the shit out of it. I think they can all agree on the importance of varyng rpms though. WHen I first got my car, I took every gear to about 4 or 4500 rpms for the first 500 miles or so. After that, I started driving normally and eventually took it to redline whenever I saw fit. But yeah, I have also heard that engines aren't broken in untill really 5-10000 miles as well and you won't se optimal gas mileage on the focus till closer to 6000 miles.

I was at my first AutoCross event with around 800 miles on the clock...
With today's manufacturing tolerances, "break in" is completely different than it was 10-15 years ago.
For the 1st 500 miles, you want to take it easy and constantly vary the revs to seat the rings properly.
The easiest way to that is to nix the cruise control completely, so you're not hanging at a certain rev for long periods of time.
Don't forget to run it up towards redline a couple times durning that initial "easy" 500 miles, or it won't ever run strong at the top end.
I'm not saying to go blasting around against the rev limiter, but run it up around 5,000-5,500 (preferably in 2nd gear) a couple times to break that nice top end in.

As far as the 5-10k mentioned above, that's about the point where you'll start seeing "normal" gas mileage results,
as anything below that is still on a relatively tight engine.

And, do your first oil change sooner rather than later.
3,000 miles (or less) is preferable.
FWIW, I did mine around 1,500 miles.

EDIT:
Well there ya go...
You must have some fast fingers Duffman355.

keep in mind that is one mans opinion. He just happened to be ambitious enough to write a webpage about it.
