I bought a Focus today.

2003 ZTS sedan. 54k miles. Out the door price after taxes title and processing fee: $6,759. Woohoo!

I traveled 100 miles away to get it. On the two hour drive home the check engine emissions light comes on. I have no warranty on the car. How much money will it cost to fix this?

Find out why first. Then ask how much. A lot of auto parts stores will read & clear CEL's (check engine light). My hunch is a bad 02 sensor. Replace them both needed or not along with a new fuel filter. Check & replace all other fluids/filters as needed. Dont forget your belts & hoses. Sounds like a lot to do, but when you save money buying used, it can cost you too.

Welcome to the community! Take your car to an auto parts store with a scanner and let us know about it, I'm sure there are plenty of people here that will be willing to give you advice on everything you would need: pricing, installation if you are a DIY guy (you can save a lot of money!) etc.

Welcome to FF and congrats on your purchase. That sounds like a great price you got her for.

BTW, check out our Mid-Atlantic forum for any Focus owners or any upcoming get-to-gethers

Welcome to the Focus family.

In addition to going to a auto parts store to have them scan the codes, there are some really inexpensive scan tools coming to market, some under $100. As long as you have a car, it will be a handy thing to have in your tool box.

Had it checked out just now. They said it's a problem with the entire catylic converter and it's going to cost around $1200 to replace the whole thing.

Excuse the rant, but with this happening on the first day I'm now having a bad feeling about the amount of problems I might have with this car.. shame because my 97 mustang with 101k miles had virtually nothing go wrong with it at all.

If it's a problem with the "entire catalytic converter" I really doubt you had this happen to you the first day - it was already bad. I suspect the CEL code was cleared (by unhooking the battery) just long enough to shaft you with the car.

Warranty is irrelevant. If you just bought it from a dealer, they should fix the problem.

My guess is that whoever you bought it from knew about the problem. You can reset the idiot light just by disconnecting the battery. You got hosed.

Get a cat back exhaust and headder for 800 total, then you increased preformance, and go rid of the codes.. just a thought..
