Funny VWs

So this past weekend I was with a couple friends at a park just enjoying the nice weather when a couple of VWs cruised in and parked in a moonshape formation for a photo shoot or something. They looked like they were totally riced out, and they were the old school models with the exception of one that was the generation before current.

In any case, one of my friends decided he was going to be an ass and park next to them with his Olds Cutlass (sp?). It was really funny because I honestly couldn't decide which cars looked more crappy but that's besides the point. After parking next to their formation he popped the hood and stood out front with his arms folded- and it was obvious he was making fun of their cars... Personally I think that's a major @ss thing to do but it was pretty funny none-the-less.

Well eventually I drove over there with my SVT and one of the guys there was pretty cool and I started talking to him. He started challenging my SVT to a race against a little VW with a claimed 1.8L non-boosted 8V. I told him that I don't race on the street, and tha type of thing should be saved for the Strip up in Eppin, NH. In any case, I thought this was a little bit bold as I recall those old school Golfs weigh in at about 2950- more than my SVT. And stock those things do not have a whole lot of power- around 110hp if I remember. I quickly glanced over and spotted the ugly little thing and the engine bay looked mostly stock. I asked if he had a schrick in it and he said that schrick only works wth the VR6s. He got more bold and said he would give me a 4 second head start for the race. I kept on saying that street racing is rather ricerish and I'd be much more willing to give him a run at the strip, and if I had a good clutch.

I am wondering what that 8v had to make him so confident though. I am assumign he had bug juice but I didn't get a god look at the engine to see. What do you guys think?

You would be suprised.. you get an audi 80 block and put it in, mill the head, pistons and rods.. and a few tricks with the gearing, and that car could potentially walk the SVT.. I have seen MANY little VW's around here in germany that hold their own.. those little motors are like tanks.. and easy to work on.. Parts are incredibly cheap.. and available.. and im talking carburated.. just jet it, retard it, tune it, forget it...

my 2 cents..

I use to have one of those old Golfs with the 1.8l 8v engine. It was a dog, and eventually the engine blew in it. I know my SVT isn't fast but compared to my old VW it is a spaceshuttle! lol

I have heard of people tweaking these 1.8s but these people didn't seem like they would build an engine up...

I had a mkII gti 8v......the are geared low and have lots of torque....and with mods...yeah they could beat an SVT up untill about 100 mph....and those things fully loaded only weigh 2250...a stripped on weighs in below 1900....a mkII gti is probably the easiest and cheapest car to build a 10sec street car.....just drop a s/c vr6 in there and put in a roll cage with some wider wheels and bam....10.8's all day long.

I don't know about 10 seconds, but my buddy used to race the old rabbits and had pleny of gti's (he's a huge vw fan if you haven't noticed) and I was quite impressed what he could do with his cars and minor modifications.

was it a mk2 or mk3?? mk2 models were pretty light(and pretty sweet too) like focusedintentions said, but the mk3 and mk4 models were porkers.

I had a few friends with late 80's and early 90's gti's and golf, I could not believe what $1000 in their engines did, one of them spaid 150 shot almost every weekend at the track for 3 years with the stock bottom end. With a milled head and a cam, a little lightening, I'd bet on him. You can make the 8v's fast by Frankensteining other cars for bigger valves, cams, ect. These are really easy to work on, easier to tear down and build.

Yeah I think he had bug juice... I doubt a little 8v 1.8 with some mild boltons would be able to beat the 16v 2.0l zetec with ease...

The A2's were like from 88 to 92 best platform they ever built imho. The 1.8's were fast but vs an SVT not much fun, dump a cam/intake/exhaust into one and enjoy, my old 88 is still running with 300 something thousand miles on it fully modded. The VW 16v is pretty much the SVT 16v Bascially...
