Why doesn't Ford try to capture the youth market?

Ford is losing gobs of money.

The explorer is no longer a cash cow because of the whole firestone debacle.

The Expeditions aren't selling because of fuel costs.

The F150 is less profitable than the previous incarnation, and Toyota and nissan have entered the ring with some really fine trucks.

Why doesn't Ford look to VW for inspiration? Yes, VW cars are fun to drive and they feel like quality cars. However, they are very expensive (VW's build costs are ridiculous) and their reliability has been horrible. So why do people buy them?

VW has aimed for the youth market in their add campaigns. When Honda tried the same thing with the ugly little element, and Toyota with their ho-hum scions they too experienced success.

When you reach for the youth market, you pique the interest of other buyers too. Old people like me don't want to admit we are getting old.

Some young, clever advertising could go a long way in selling their products.

Just my opinion, what do you think?

"I like to live on the edge-uhh!"

Does that count?
But seriously, I agree with you there. I don't know what's up with Ford, they're starting to turn pretty old-people-ish.

They ARE trying to recapture the youth market, look at the new focus...just kidding. I like it, but I would like a hatch much more.

I have a feeling change will come slowly to Ford. I believe they can position themselves well once again - but by the time they've done so, a lot of people will probably have moved on. I'm pretty sure I will have.

Good point.

But look at VW- the Rabbit is a fairly ordinary hatch and the Jetta is a corola clone- not exactly exciting.

Even the performance versions (GLI and GTI) aren't really heart-pounding (they are fun and have nice interiors).
The Beetle (one could argue) is another story. But VW was on the upswing before it arrived. They did it with clever adds and cross-promotions with Trek and K2.

What about scion? The Xa and Xb are just a reskin on the echo platform. All they did was make them weirder-looking and upscaled the quality of the interior. The Honda element is little more than a baby minivan.
But they sell them even though they cost more than similar vehicles because of the marketing.

I just think if they offered some clever adds rather than some jingle that sounds youthful to a 50-year-old executive they could generate more buzz.

I do think the fusion is definitely a vehicle they could sell as youthful with a little tweaking.

You joke but that is their swing at the youth market- that's what scares me.

isn't that what the new mustang is for? Except it kills them too. I 17 bought a GT and ran over and killed someone in my town. I (dealer) friend sold it to him.

they also aren't that cheap. But its the main reason why they aren't bringing over the euro foci.
