'07 Focus a bargain overall

I know these cars aren't perfect and the car has been around for a while but I have to tell you my impressions after about 2 months of serious car shopping and comparisons. My wife wanted a new, smaller car that got better gas mileage than her Chevy Malibu V6. We started out looking at '05-06 Corollas, Sentra's and Civics. I considered some of the other Japanese and Korean small cars but after having rented a couple, was not impressed.
The Civics were nice but very pricey. We generally ruled them out unless we could find a real bargain. We never did. The Corollas were nice and my wife was really enamored by the LE model with the wood trim. We tried hard to buy a low mileage '05 or 06 but again, had trouble finding one at a reasonable price. To me they were also pretty small and surprisingly noisey for a Toyota product. The Sentras were OK but certainly not much fun to drive. The new '07' Sentras were pretty sharp and great mileage but again the dealers were not willing to discount much. We kept coming back to the Focus-- It was relatively roomy, was actually fun to drive, gave reasonable gas mileage (even with the "adjusted" figures) and we could find dozens of '06 models with low miles cheap. When test driving a couple of '06's, we saw that the dealer was offering '07's with the $2500 rebate and additional discount, we took a look. She and I are pleased as can be. A smallish car but roomy inside, decent trunk space, spunky to drive with lots of features for far less than we could drive an '06 version of other cars. I know we all complain about some aspects of these cars but really, we get a lot for the money.

I agree totally. We also were forced to replace our Chevy Malibu and went car shopping. I found the Japanese dealerships were content offering 6.9% on their used 04-06's. That was too much, as for GM.. after being fed up with GM on my Malibu I didn't even bother. When I test drove the Focus I was more than impressed. So we got a fully loaded on for 1.5% financing which I was really happy with.

Great car for a great price.

Yeah good to hear. And I agree, the bang for the buck with a focus is great.

Sorry to hear that you both had Malibus. My wife has one. Needless to say, GM has lost another customer here when it comes time to replace that thing.

I had a 2003 Malibu... I loved the car in general.. the way it handled etc.. but man was it ever a cash eater. I had to replace the entire front end it seemed.. the suspension was horrible! Then the final straw was the gasket that is known to blow on those things.

I could have dealt with the suspension problems.. but when an engine gasket blows before 60,000 miles... nah.

I think you summed up our experience as well. I was about to sign for a mazda 3 when we took another ride in the focus. After a somewhat long discussion regarding price, features, looks etc. We ordered the focus hatchback (zx5). It is just a blast to drive, love the looks etc. And an incredible value.

focus is a huge bang for buck car, its a fun lil car to drive, cheap to maintain(oilchanges, plugs, etc..) and for under 15k for a new model you can go wrong, and the 5 year 100k powertrain warranty helps!

ditto here, i have a 95 escort that we got new and now has 285,000 miles on it and the only things needing replacement were the usuall, alt, brakes, heater core and the like but nothing major. my bro -in-law is ford mechanic and said the 2.0 is basicaly the 1.9 bored out and very reliable and as easy to make repairs to down the line after the 100000 mi. warr. is through. so hopefully i will be as happy in my 07 zx4 ses as i was in my cort lx..
