Ford 500 being renamed to Ford Taurus

WTF, they discontinue the Taurus only to then rename the Ford 500 to Taurus. Is it me, or has Ford's logic gotten a lot more erratic lately?

1) They are losing money every year due to sales
2) SVT is now dead, so no more race and development division
3) One of the main things that I have noticed is Ford has decided to freshen the brand, what I mean is that every model of car only continues for about 3 to 5 years. Major problems with this, yes this is great for boosting car sales with new models but then parts are always different, cars become extinct and maintenance isn't easy anymore. Like where the hell do you buy sway bar links for a 1991 Ford Tempo

^what he said, ford is in big trouble here in the US they need to do something, the "Taurus" name is what they are gonna try to sell again, a name is a very very powerful thing in the world of maketing and advertising, even something as simple as a name change could help ford

Good point DilSVT. I'm usually an optimist, so Ford is probably just trying to find it's models that are going to work the best and stick with them. I do think that since they have basically put everything on the line, that they will do something drastic within the next 5-10 years that will bring their company back up. If they don't they will go under and since they own virtually nothing in their own company anymore, I think that's great motivation to come up with something good.

it's kinda of like calling a turd a piece of crap, isn't it? what ford needs to do is step back, pull it's head out of it's ass, and find out what the people ACTUALLY want rather than spending lots of time and money guessing....for example, we all know we'd love the RS focus here, but in other parts of the world, ford sells a turbo-diesel crew cab Ranger. Not here, but other places. Why? Myself as well as all the other ranger guys I know would love one, just like alot of guys here would love an RS....

Ford just doesn't get it is all....

I'm not at all surprised. Once again they made a bad move IMO. If I was in the market for a domestic sedan and I didn't know any better I'd be more inclined to look into a car called "The 500" in the possibility that it could be something similar to the Chrysler 300. Rather than the Taurus which to me is a tired name of a pretty mediocre and unimpressive vehicle. Moves like this are foiling their attempts to "refresh" their line up. Like focusman6297 said. A name is a very powerful thing in the world of marketing.

bringing back the taurus, but does it help?

so i just ran across this article on msn.com and thought i'd share, i haven't seen any mention of it on here yet.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com....aspx?GT1=9114

apparently ford has decided that the 500 hundred will suddenly jump in sales if renamed "taurus." but it's the still going to be the same vehicle, just with the 2008 facelift that we already know is coming to add the chrome 3 bar grille, and maybe some other tweaks to it? idk, but still, will anyone actually care that the taurus has "returned?" no one buys the 500 hundred now, i don't see where a name change would help too terribly much in reviving the vehicle, let alone ford.

I don't see it helping either. There are some premium names out there that it seems people will buy no matter what, but Taurus isn't one of them...

honestly, the 500 is a really nice car, just doesn't have an engine. If they offered a turbo variant or the 3 valve V8, maybe it could compete with the charger. Honestly, it is a better car I think. I don't think changing the name will do shit btw.

apparently they're giving it a more powerfull engine by the article. whether or not they give it a v8 (im betting a v6) is a matter of waiting. but i agree, the renaming of the 500 to the taurus dont seem like to much of a "saver" to me.
