If and which focus should I buy used??

Here's the deal. Need a commuting car. Budget of only 10k max.

Looked at so far...
1) honda/toyota, too damn boring, cheap
2) volkswagen, fun, good looking, complaints on reliability, expensive to fix
- I am ok with the occasional trip for a repair or two but if each repair on
average costs more than say fixing a ford or chrysler, then that sucks
3) nissan, eh, no to maxima/altima(looks boring). new altima is nice but ain't got that $$$
4) Subaru, like the forester, only want a 5-spd so not too many around, impreza nice but too small

Now I am thinking about a focus. I used to own a 2.5 duratect contour 5-spd. fun little car. damn engine had an awesome sound.

What's the deal with focus's?
Which years are better?
Which engine sounds better?

Within my budget, which focus should I be trying to find.

Thanks!

if you're looking for a straight out commuting car - go for a 03 focus - you can find plenty under 10k with around 20k miles - still under warranty. I've also seen 2k2 focus SVts for around 12k.

as far as a VW - it would only make sense for you if you get a tdi - you can find 2-3 year old tdis for around 11-12k - the 1,8t and vr6 are fun, but the torque and gas mileage of the tdi just plain rocks - if i will ever buy another new vw it WLL be a tdi

overall i would suggest a 2k3 focus se with few options (less stuff to break and it;s much easier to negotiate price)

even more importantly start taking test drives, see which car you feel most comfortable in and see which dealer will treat you right

good luck

focus is a good little car for the money

when the 2005 hits the showrooms, they should be giving pretty steep discounts on the 04's, you might be able to get into a new 04 for around 10k, if you can wait that long, and dont mind a base model focus. if you cant wait, or want a higher model, you can always look into the used 03s, the should be in that price range.

A good used 02 or 03 Focus should be well in reach of the budget you have set. I would go for a 2.3 if available but if not a 2.0 Zetec would be just as nice. Base model or not you will find the Focus to be a great little econ car to drive and own, insurance is cheap (depending upon your record of course) and you cant beat the saving with gas. Average MPG is anywhere from 25 to 28 if not higher. The Ford Focus is a good car to own and I would own no other. Believe me I have owned a variety of cars and I'm glad to be back in a Ford. Just my .02

Believe it not, with some judicious shopping you may be able to track down a new focus for 10K. I got my 03 ZX3 with convenience packages (16" wheels, cruise, etc) for 9900.00 once rebates, dealer discounts etc. were considered. I could have gotten a four door SE (non-zetec)for about a grand less. The deals are out there you just have to look for them.

with the SPI engine i get any where from 34-36mpg. (but only look for this engine if you do not mind less power.)

You can buy a LOT of Focus for 10k. I got my 02 ZX5 for 9K. Only has 18K miles and is loaded; leather, all power, 6 disc changer. I just saw an 01 ZX3 with 100k on it gor for 3800 bucks on Ebay! Heck, at that you could get 2!

Go with the ZTEC at least, and the 2.3 if you can find one within your budget. Much fun to drive and good mileage too.

Let us know what you get! (hope it's not a rice burner!)

getting up to walk out always seems to lower the price too... if they think you wont buy, prices drops... they would rather make a small profit off you then none at all. but you have to be careful not to deal to hard, becuase the dealers can usually turn around and sell the car to someone else. usually for a higher price.
