More on Ford's "Unified" Design

For those who hate the three-bar grill look, you may be in for some good news. A recent article from Left Lane News points out that Ford will be getting rid of the North American AND European design.

New Ford CEO, Alan Mulally, has already hinted on this new strategy before in a previous article. This second article seems to make it more official, and shows that he's really sticking to his guns with the unified design strategy. Whether the new unified/global design will be better than both the American AND European line of Fords is still to be seen, however.

Europeans are probably left grinding their teeth with news of this planned change, considering that their line of Fords are already beautifully designed, with rock solid performance to boot. Most Americans, on the other hand, probably think that things can't get any worse than they are now, with the current designs that are available!

Anyway, I always believed that the 2008 Focus design was simply residual leftovers from Ford's previous leadership (since it follows the chrome bar grill aesthetic). Rather than waste money and scrap the project completely, they probably thought it would've been better just to complete it and release it anyway, at least for a short while. Hopefully this should be a sign of good things to come.

We can dream, but I'll put my chips on Ford saying in 2010 that the reskinned '08 Focus is selling just fine and that there's no reason to stop production and give us the next global platform model. I'm solidly convinced that when we got the MkI Focus in a nearly direct-import version in 2000, the planets were aligned just so and Ford gave us a nearly untouched Euro compact. I don't expect the same sequence of events that brought about the Focus being sold in the domestic market -and in as close to a direct import as it was- to occur ever again. Even if we get the MkIII, its going to be severely watered down.

To quote The Who; "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

This isn't a good sign:

Quote:
"We feel we'll be able to get to a common design language that's bold, as it should be for the American market, and is absolutely applicable to the European market as well," Mays said
Quoted from the above-linked article

IMO, any time you hear Ford executives throwing the word "bold" around, look out. Just look at their current lineup and the advertising slogan that goes with it If anything, this bodes poorly for both the US market and the global market; status quo for us and a major downgrade for everyone else.
