Question Loud Turn Signal

Anybody know how I can mute these damn annoying turn signals? These have got to be the loudest blinkers I've ever heard. Even when I'm on the phone people know I'm driving!

There is a thread on here someplace on how to track it down inside the steering column and stuff cotton in it to mute it. If you can find it it should be stickied into the how-to section....

You gotta love 'em. I see you are new to Focus. Trust me, you'll get used to them. Like many here did. I think Ford did this on purpose to let people who forget to turn off their signals know that their signals are on.

While waiting for one of those 3-4 minute stop lights.....keep the blinker off. Turn it on when the light turns green. Make a game of using it as little as possible, but yet signaling your intentions to other drivers. LOL...a way to tone down that little sucker would be good mod.

There's two ways to do it, one completely stops the clicking noise and the other reduces it to a reasonable volume. Since its a modern circuit-based system, there is no relay that clicks so Ford installed a small speaker in the turn signal/headlight beam control stalk. If you remove it and pop it open you'll see the speaker soldered to the board. Option one is desoldering the speaker from the board and completely removing it from the system, option two is jamming something in the hole in the speaker, a piece of a toothpick works well. I did the second option with the toothpick and the volume drops to a point where you can just notice it over the rest of the noises in the car.

I was test driving a black '01 ZX3 while going car shopping last summer, and it had a reduced turn signal noise. However, there was nothing jammed in there to dampen the noise. So the original owner found some other way to do it.

I searched every crack and hole and couldn't see anything that would visibly make it quieter. Although there were subtle signs on that Focus that it had been in an accident. So maybe something got loosened in the collision. Who knows...

I have to say that I actually prefer the louder noise. It's one of the things that sticks out from all the other cars. Plus it also helps when I have the music up loud. But I understand how it can be annoying to some people. Best of luck in trying to find a solution.
