Honda questions?

Hey Guys!!

This is a little off topic from everything and a little random, but, can someone explain some things for me...

- What is a VTEC on honda, im clueless.
-They other day, I was talken to some kid at school and he said his civic had VTEC, I kinda just stood there and looked at him like he was a retard, bc not only did it not mean anything, but I didn't even know what it was.. lol.

- What type of honda civic's should I be concerned about running against, for example... is there a certain civic that would destroy me. (All stock) ??

- What is the diff between Si's and regular civics?

Thanks guys!!!

VTEC stand for Variable Valve Timing Electronic lift Control. Basically, when the engine reaches 5k rpms, the cams switch to a different lobe giving the car more power. The cars don't matter because everyone swaps engines for the most part. You should be concered with any car that has these engines in it:
B16,B18,H22,K20,K24. People find ways to put these engines into all kinds of civics, CRX's, Accords, Integra's. RSX',etc.

A regular civic is a SOHC I4 with 127 or so hp,I think the 2006 civic comes with 140hp, but a 99-2001 Si has a B16 producing 160hp, the 2002 comes with a K20 producing 165 hp, and the 2006 Si comes with the base version of the K20 producing 197 hp.

The B18 comes from an integra and produces 174 hp or something like that, but you can also find a version of the B18 that came in the type R integra that produces 197hp or so. The H22 comes from a prelude and produces around 210 hp IIRC. The base model K20 found in the 2002-05 civic Si and RSX produces 165hp, and there is also a 200hp model found in the RSX-Type S and the New Civic SI. The K24 comes from a honda CRV and is used with cylinder heads from other K series engines to produce more power.

I know some of my information might be a little off because it's all coming from memory and I am not going to be exact on all my numbers but pretty close. And I am sure more people will have stuff to add about the ctec part because I don't know how to explain it.

But in a nutshell, with a stock ZX3, any 1999+ civic si that is stock will beat you. It won't destroy you, but it will beat you. And this is with the drivers being of equal abilities. Pretty much don't race anything with a DOHC VTEC for money, cause you will lose.

This video helps a lot with the VTEC question. Basically under normal conditions the engine uses the normal cam profile on the left and right, but when the engine reaches a certain rpm. A solenoid on the side of the head reads the spike in the oil pressure and pushes the little pins inside the rocker arms over so that they lock the rocker arms together. Then the middle arm takes over and uses the second more aggressive profile on the cam to open the valves wider and allow the engine to make more power at higher rpms.
