my GF's new ( used ) focus ? feedback please

My gf is thinking about trading in her 04 gas guzzeling v6 mustang for an 05 focus zx4 with 2.0 duratec

of course, im a focus lover and ive been recommending her get one to.

the Focus has about 32k miles on it, auto tranny, power windows/locks, cruise, tilt, all the goodies minus sunroof. we got the dealer down to a price of 11.9k.

they offered her 7.7k for her mustang, which has around 76k miles, and minor body damage from when she hit a dog.

of course she is upside down on her mustang, so she'll have to eat it on the trade, but i think the offer from the dealer is a decent price.

Both of my foci have been zetec. so I dont know much about the duratec?
Are there any issues we should be aware of ? We will probably go sign papers today if all goes well. We took the car home last night, and it runs great. Everything seems to be fine and dandy, but i wanted to ask you guys for opnions on this car before we close the deal.

Thanks fellez

Sounds like the price is a bit high to me. You should be able to find one cheaper than that. Other than that, be careful on that upside down thing. That can really put a hurting on you with payments.

One other thing you may want to consider, alot of the time, you can finance a new car better than a used one. At the price they want for that used one, look at what they can work out on a new one.

^^ we did look at a 2006 model at a diff dealership. They wanted to give her 7.5k for the trade. the payments would be the same, but total amount financed would be 22k, as oposed to 16k for the used one.

i should also mention that her credit sucks.

the used lot is the same was the main dealership, but its the " credit connection". they work with people with poor credit. i figured this place would be able to offer the best deal. so far it had.

I can't imagine her v6 'Stang is that bad on gas.Let's say...20mpg?The Focus 2.3 Duratec auto will get,what,25mpg?You will have to drive a LONG time to recoup the additional money you will spend on a different car verses keeping the one she already has.Unless she dislikes the 'Stang, keep it.They are very dependable cars.

she had a ranger that was traded in for a convertible mustang which left her upside down. then that was traded for the new mustange which left her more upside down. i suggested she get a used car and try to pay it off before getting something else. which is the main reason we went with a used.

I agree the price does seem a little high, unless it is the ST.

I don't know much about the duratec, but it seems like a good engine, its based off a Mazda design right? Well, I wouldn't jump right into it just because I think you could get a lower price somewhere else.

And if the other dealer only offered $200 less on a trade in, just haggle with them a little, bring in the other appraisal and see if they can match or beat it. And take a second look aty the numbers, while you say her credit is poor you did say it would be the same ammount in payments right? well You figure she wants a dependable car meaning she wants it for a while so you might as well get it brand new, take into consideration warenty and piece of mind as well.

Just a thought, sorry if i came off as pushy.

the stang is terrible on gas. we live about 35 miles apart and both drive back and forth quit a bit. she is spending 45-55 dollars a week in her stang, and i only about 35-40 and that with premium fuel.

Gas was the main reason for the trade, but recommended the focus for other reasons like:

leg room- the stang is very cramped, especially in the back seat.

and rear wheel drive sucks on icy roads. the focus just handels so much better.
