2000 Zetec check engine code= lean fuel mixture

Hello every one, new to the Forum. I use a forum like this for dirt bikes (www.thumpertalk.com) and just knew there would be something like this for the Focus.

Anyway, I got my daughter a 2000 Focus (Zetec, cd, keyless, 4 door with wing, SE, 67k, paid 4450!). We've had it less than a week and the 'check engine' light came on. We have had the oil changed, that's it. So I took it to AutoZone and was gonna buy a code reader ('nother story there, they were $150!). So I had the guy read it with his thingy and he said it said 'lean fuel mixture' or something to that effect. I put plugs in it and changed the air filter, hoping a nasty filter caused it. After washing it and waxing it (yeah, I spoil my daughter, but the car is so cool), the light came back on.

I was thinking it may be a clogged fuel filter. It's something I could do myself and it's cheap. I figure it's not terribly likely, but either way, the fuel filter is new.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

there was some kind of recall on the fuel filter for the early foci. you might want to look into that. call up a dealership with your vin number, and they should be able to tell you if your car is eligable, and if it has been done

some one smarter should be able to give you more info....

something cheap that you can do is also to put some fuel system cleaner in the car and see if that clears it up some, you could just have some clogged injectors or a fuel line in need of cleaning, if that doesn't take care of the problem i would highly suggest taking it either to a dealership or to where ever you bought the car and have them take care of it...
