Automatic vs Manual Transaxle

Which is better? How good, or bad, is the automtic with the 2.0 DOHC? I can get a practically new ZX3 with an auto for cheap. But I really want a 5 spd. Where I live autos are everywhere, and sticks are rare. Damn lazy Americans that don't want to shift.

If you ever want true performance and control - MTX all the way. However, if this is just for driving around (esp. in anything that resembles traffic), an ATX is good for you. Everyone here is into modding and performance, so I would imagine the typical answer is: Manual! I know an automatic will lose you a few MPG and perhaps (I am no expert by far) some horses.

I want the MTX for 3 main reasons. First, I really believe 4 cylinders and automatics are a poor mix. Second, I like to have absolute control over what gear I'm in and when. Third, manual transmissions are simple compared to automatics, and (to me) it seems like there is less chance to have something go wrong with it.

As for traffic...either is fine in my book. I drove my 5 speed V6 Mustang in heavy city traffic for 3 years. Anyone that complains about driving a stick in heavy traffic is just a whinny baby.

I don't know how well the dealers in NY will work with you on used Foci, but I told my local Ford dealer what I wanted and they found one just like it, color and all. It did take about 4 weeks though.

Well.....my Father owns a Ford dealership, so if it's out there, he can find it.

I'm just looking for a first hand experience review of what an automtic is like to drive. So I can compare it to the 5 speed I drove a couple years back.

I want everything, except an auto. Windows, locks, cruise, tilt, a/c. They only things I'd rather stay away from are sunroof's (they leak over time) and auto trannies. Oh and any shade of green for a color. God damn I hate green cars! I'm so sick of seeing green cars. I'll never own a green car.

I'm sorry, but MTX in heavy stop and go for an hour+ DEFINATELY SUCKS - I don't care how whiney or babyish you would call those sentiments. Now, I've owned MTX all my life and deal with it, but my father, who drove 18-wheel and ready-mix trucks for most of his working life, will tell you, in traffic, manuals are a drag. In fact, the driving environment most of us crave and desire is not bumper to bumper - it is high performance on lonely streets and roads. If you go to the racing forum here, you will find most describe their conquests as happening on empty streets at night or out on the open freeway.

On one thing we agree though: MTX is the way to go!

Heavy trucks are a whole 'nother game. I'm only talking about cars and light pickups.
