yeaah, but at least on the old school, it had a purpose.

if i'm not mistaken, thats a daytona, and without that wing, it could damn near fly, lol

the daytona, the celica looked cooler. And if i'm not mistaken that was one if the wings offered from the factory and it i was on the celica GTFour which was turboed and had AWD

Also, the difference was that your "old school" cars were rear wheel drive, so a spoiler actually helped put some downforce on the back of the car. With today's tricked out Civics, which are front wheel drive, a spoiler only means more drag.

^ it depends on the size and shape of the spoiler. most fctory spoilers cause only miniml amounts of drag and downforce. and the big issue at hand isn't drag, its downforce. Downforce on the rear lifts the front wheels and takes traction from them making it A) harder to accelerate without losing grip, and B) extremely difficult to handle. The wing on that celica doen't have the potential to add much down force or drag. And the amount of down force could be beneficial because the rear wheels are being driven, and the front of the celica is fairly aerodynamically sound.

If memeory serves me correctly, the Challenger Daytona was banned from racing because it had too much of an advantage over the other cars on the track, therefore won nearly every damn race.

And I think that Celica is actually trying to look more like it's big brother, the Supra.

Any car can benefit from downforce. It just not as necessary on a FWD car. Funny tho how you single out civic's, i have seen more than a few "ricer" style wings on Focus' and nearly any other car you can think of.

Doesnt it help with the 50/50 weight balance on high speed road courses, and also the cornering grip of the rear tires?
