What defines a sports car?

I am troubled by car classifications. What defines a sports car? I believe a roadster is a rwd lightweight convertible. What defines a gt (grand touring or gran turismo) car? What is a super car? Is there any more classifications I am forgetting?

Sports car: An automobile equipped for racing, especially an aerodynamically shaped one-passenger or two-passenger vehicle having a low center of gravity and steering and suspension designed for precise control at high speeds.

Sports Car - Generally any car that offers good performance or fun. Usually a two-door, two seat car, but sometimes they are sport sedans.

Supercar - A supercar is generally a car that does one or several things quite well, usually in speed and/or acceleration.

Grand Touring: (GT) A term used for a sportier car.

^If I went by these definitions I could consider any high performance vehicle a Supercar, sports car, or GT. Is a car's definition in the eye of the beholder?

good points. I think it's what ever the commpany thinks will sell. Alot of GT badges are slapped on a car just because they have a bigger engine and 16" rims. It just seems to be the thing to do so they can sell cars.

I think it's pretty obvious what a manufacturer's intentions are when they build a car, it's just a matter of agreeing with them or not.

a good example is the Escort GT that I had. It wasn't too much differnt then the lx model. It had more power and better suspension but all together it's not that much differnt.

great definition on the sports car but i would add in there that it obviously needs good power too.

for the supercar i usually go with something that is above 100 thou and has insane displacement and hp. also midengine usually comes with that. aerodynamics for high speeds.

GT is usually a sportier version of a base car.

roadster: 1. An open automobile having a single seat in the front for two or three people and a rumble seat or luggage compartment in the back. 2. A horse for riding on a road.

Roadster - An open automobile having a front seat and a rumble seat

I've always considered the Elise a roadster. Am I wrong?

I think the terms are generic and should only be used for generalization and not classification.

unless your a young ricer.. then a sportscar/supercar/GT is a civic with neon, stickers, wing, fart can, and a turbo blow off valve simulator
