Why the US car market sucks!

This topic is a general discussion about the US vs. the world car market.

Why do you think the US gets such crappy cars and poor performance compared to models sold worldwide.

Take the Focus RS for example. Why do they (uk) have that model in their lineup and we do not?

Most Americans either want big gas guzzling SUVS and pickups, or boring but reliable cars like the Camry or Accord.

Enthusiests like us are the minority.

The biggest reason is that the US has always had big cars and there was never really a market for compact. The big three tried in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. All failed - Vega, pinto, omni, festiva, mustang II and aspire. All but the escort were bombs. Those of us with sub compacts are still the small minority. Besides with the RS the US isnot very big into rally like the rest of the world. Kinda like soccer. That's what I see it as, yes there are a lot of ppl who would buy them over here but there wouldn't be enough to make it profitable. It's all about the money.

How many were produced? Would be my first ? But like i said, the RS would sell, but not good enoght for Ford to make a profit. Besides for is just getting back on thier feet from the rebuild of the company. That may be a part of it to. Why are they killing the SVTF?

Because the SVTF is part of the focus line up and the focus lineup is getting a new engine. No time to develop a performance oriented duratec yet.

I guess the EPA, and the fact that most U.S Car manufacturers dont follow "trends" because by the time they get a car out that trend is over with and everyone wants somthing new...
Also serious car people are out numbered by regular people who just want to just go from point a to b, therefore manufacturers dont try as hard on higher performance cars as they do standard cars.

Ok, I didn't know the reason behind it.

I still belive that those who decide for us(big wigs at FOMOCO) don't think they will make money. I think the US is developing a audiance for rally x-crossing.
