Fuel additive cardboard cap in fuel tank

I'll start by saying, yes I must be an idiot. I can't believe this happened but it did.

I hardly ever use fuel additives but I decided to put a bottle in my 2004 Focus with 240K. I took the cap off the bottle, turned to pour it in the tank, and in slow motion I watched the little 3/4" cardboard cap that usually resides inside the cap fall into the filler neck. By this time the bottle was already upside down and much of the additive liquid had already been poured; it was too late to try to reach in and grab it.

What am I looking at here? Is there a screen inside the filler neck to catch things like this? Is there a screen or something inside the tank to stop small particles from being sucked into the lines?

In Oregon we can't do self serve gas AND there is a law that doesn't allow attendants to "top off" tanks but I thought about getting a 5 gallon can and trying to fill it absolutely full to see if it floats to the top of the filler neck.

Thoughts?

There's a screen on the pickup that prevents small items from getting to the pump, not the first time this has happened to someone & I haven't heard of any problems resulting. (VERY fine mesh "sock" filter on the pickup, dust level filtration)

The hell you mean, you can't top off your tank or fill up your own gas?

State law, you don't pump your own gas in Oregon. Gas station attendant does it. Jersey too I think.

Jersey won't let you pump gas either. It is all for the safety of the people..... Been a law for a really really long time. I researched it out of curiosity.

I got screamed at when I tried to pump gas. I did not realize there was a law and the dude came running over telling me to get back in the car. Then it took him another 5 minutes to come and pump my gas for me.
