better handling and the other no duh improvements. when racing, better grip on start less wheelspin (spinning four tires is harder than two) and etc

i used to have a 79 jeep cj7 with a v8 and quadratrac. it was all wheel drive all the time, and it had low range unlike most of todays toys. well i was 20 and nobody could tell me any different, and i raced my share of the days sports cars, irocs, eclipses etc. and i usually whipped every one. the thing handled awesome and just when they might be slidin i was able to step on mine...

Ya AWD will give better traction, more aggressive steering, more fun on dirt roads, better launches. But if you like to do burnouts its alot harder with AWD(need pure power), being no braking wheels.

AWD is better for launching but worse for top end speed. In an awd car a lot of the power is lost through the drivetrain. For power to the wheels FWD>RWD>AWD. For launching AWD>RWD>FWD. For battling the elements AWD>FWD>RWD.
If awd is coupled with a stiff suspension it will handle. If awd is coupled with a soft suspension like an Impreza (not including STI) the handling will not be any better than front wheel drive.
AWD cars tend to understeer in corners like fwd cars. RWD cars oversteer. Some fwd cars, like the SVTF, can oversteer because the suspension is stiff.

some of the Pros: improved overall traction in all conditions, generally better handling balance

some of the Cons: increased understeer, increased mechanical complexity, increased fuel usage
