there was probably a rock chip in the windshield. when you hit the bump is cracked.. I don't think it has to do with the heat vs cold cause we would have this happen all too much.

rock chip has been there for months, it must have had something to do with the cold.

when you have a rock chip, water works it's way into it.....water expands when it is cold (actually when it freezes), further stressing the glass....all it would have taken is a bump to cause the crack...the defroster didn't have anything to do with it.

at any rate, it was the temperature and the water and the rock chip that did it. happens all the time. contact your insurance agent and ask if they cover glass. State farm covers windshields with a 0 deductable

I had a small rock chip in mine a month after I bought the car. I drove to another state where the weather was colder and drier than home and it cracked a few inches. By the time I got home a few days later the crack went all the way across my window. The windshield from Ford direct would have been close to $1500. I got it from Ford but with a "family discount" for around $400 so I did not have to claim it on insurance.

I had a rock chip in my windshield a couple months ago....I have $100 comprehensive deductible so I did a google search to see if I could make the $100 deductible disappear LOL...www.89glass.com has a $100 online discount so they took care of mine....I didn't have to pay a thing and my insurance didn't increase.....Good luck!!
