I think between my brothers and dad we have had everyyear Pinto made 1971-81 .I had a 72 and a 77 still get a smile when I think about the fun I had in those cars.

My father owned a blue 77 Pinto wagon with a 4-spd manual and rallye style wheels.


It should also be noted that like the Pinto,the more popular Crown Victoria has also had some safety issues in regards to its fuel tank as well.

Most of those were overblown in relation to the energies involved (80 mph + collisions as opposed to the low speed sort in the Pinto). The CVPI and now the Taurus interceptor were the only cars certified to withstand a 75 mph rear impact test with minimal fuel leakage. They also put in fire suppression systems as an option on the police packages.

It isn't overblown if police officers were killed in those collisions. And the suppression systems were only installed in 2005 and newer CVPIs.

F Series pickups were also very well documented for fuel tank related issues(tank straps rusting out due to salt corrosion)as well. Plenty of law enforcement agencies use those vehicles as well.
