GM and Peugeot to Develop Four Vehicle Platforms Together

For years, Renault-Nissan president Carlos Ghosn has predicted that the auto industry will need to consolidate, and that as a result weíll be left with a small number of mega-manufacturers. His soothsaying now is looking rather accurate, with smaller automakers folding or being absorbed by larger ones, and even the big companies forming alliances. Not to be left standing without a seat when the music stops, General Motors inked a deal with PSA Peugeot CitroŽn in February of this year. GMís German subsidiary, Opel, is crumbling; PSA Peugeot CitroŽn is so troubled that just yesterday the French government announced it would guarantee (acting as an insurance company, basically) $9 billion worth of loans for the French firm. Itís a match made in heaving, one might say. Today, GM and PSA Peugeot CitroŽn announced they would be collaborating on development of four vehicle platforms, with the first vehicles hitting production in 2016. Hereís what theyíve announced, and our takeóthat is, assuming GM doesnít spin off Opel completely in the next four years.

A joint program for a compact-class multi-purpose van for Opel/Vauxhall and a compact-class crossover utility vehicle for the Peugeot brand

GM will get a small van that will compete in a big segment with vehicles like the Ford Transit Connect. European companies have had badge-engineered vans for decades, and the current Opel vans come from Renault and Fiat. No big deal. Peugeot needs a small crossover to replace its current offering, a rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Both are important products, but why wonít Peugeot get the van?

A joint multi-purpose vehicle program for the small-car segment for Opel/Vauxhall and the CitroŽn brand

Again, a very sensible place for collaboration. CitroŽn practically invented the multi-purpose-vehicle, or MPV, segment in the late 1990s. MPVs still are popular in Europe, but have given up ground to small crossovers. A joint platform will lower development costs for both companies, providing a less-expensive route to a segment thatís important but not delivering blockbuster sales.

An upgraded low CO2 small-car segment platform to feed Opel/Vauxhallís and PSAís next generation of cars in Europe and other regions

Take note that GM is not saying this is a new joint program, but an evolution of something currently in use. Weíd guess itís the next generation of GMís Gamma platform, currently used in the Sonic and underpinning the new Opel Adam. Opel can really benefit from Peugeotís help on future compacts cars, as Peugeotís historical strength has been selling small cars for even smaller prices. Small cars have been one of the hottest areas for tie-ups in the automotive world in the past few years: Nissan and Renault use a common platform for their compacts, the Ford Ka is a Fiat 500 under the skin, and the first fruit of the Fiat/Chrysler merger was the compact Dodge Dart.

Oh boy. Doesn't Peugeot owe the French Government about 10b Euro? This is a match made in heaven.

For many years I have admired Peugot vehicles.
But they aren't in good financial condition.
I think this may turn out to be a mistake on GMs part.

Ya Peugoet owes the french a lot of money from back in 2008 and they just recently got another bail out. like last week. your right this is a match made in heaven. The reason they are doing this is because they arent' making enough money on their own in Europe because of the downturn in demand for vehicles. it will be interesting to see what they come up with. haha

First Daewoo, then Peugoet. I predict that GM will merge with TATA in a few years.

GM's partnership with Daewoo produced some truly horrible fake Chevys. The Optra and Epica were sold in Canada and were enough to scare away small car buyers for years.

Now they set their sights on a French company. Renault ruined Nissan's lineup as far as I am concerned and Peugot will infuse weirdness into any joint car they produce. In all likelyhood it will be a rebaged existing Peugot model.

I worked at an import auto garage for 10 years in the 90's and endured Peugot 505's that were ridiculously unreliable and too quirky to describe. that was a long time ago, but i sense they are still shit.

A friend of mine works at a Chevy dealership and he says the Cruze, another Daewoo in disguise, is no better than the older Daewoo Chevs. Nicer looking, if a bit dull, I guess.

At least the German designed Focus is still a full blooded Ford.

The Cruze is a Daewoo? Are you sure?
I thought the Sonic was the only Daewoo in GMs inventory.

Daewoo led the design team to develop it and it is also sold as the Daewoo Lacetti. It does get confusing as to who exactly is responsible, since GM basically owns Daewoo , and Opel played a part too, and GM owns/is Opel. I meant it as an insult, since water with .0002 percent piss in it would still be pissy water.

Wikipedia has a lot of info on the Cruze, but it is a mixed breed car for sure.

The best bed partners GM had were Toyota and Suzuki on their joint venture to build Geo Prisms & Sprints. The world could've lived without their alliance with Isuzu to build that horrible Storm.

They should definitely stay out of bed with other financially stricken companies...they can't afford it.

And +1 on Renault ruining Nissan. They finished making all their cars ugly with the new Altima. Now they have NOTHING I'd want except the Z. Here's hoping they don't bastardize that as well.
