mercury cougar

why is the v6 cougar so slow? i've been trying to figure it out, with 170hp and a v6 why does it perform so poorly? anyone want to take a stab at it and let me know? the weight is 500lbs more than the focus so its not like it weights tons more.

It's the transmision. Ford has never made a really nice auto in my opinion. I can tell because my best friend has a manual cougar and it's noticably faster than my zetec. I think the auto also gave the v6 mustangs a bad name. But what are you gonna do? No one wants a stick anymore

so a v6 with the manual is pretty quick?

reasons i ask is cause im looking at the cougar engine for a possible swap since they both use the same tranny it wont be as pricey as finding a tranny as well...then i read that the v6 cougars suck so i was second guessing myself.

It has to be the tranny. Or they are poorly made. Do a crate V6 . That will be cool.

I know the V6 2.5L duratec I had in my contour was an awesome engine...plenty of get-up and go, and that was in an auto.

The ticket is a 3.0 Taurus block and a 2.5 Cougar topend. As far as the 40 extra hp and the 500lbs more weight, that nearly cancels out. The Focus is also geared lower than the Cougar, alot of Cougar guys swap in Focus diffs.

A engine swap of that type is alot of $, alot of labor, and alot of knowhow. Make sure you know what your getting into. For the same or less $ you can go FI or a n/a build up and get more hp.

Before someone flames me, "for the average guy" FI or a n/a buildup is the better way to go.

Can't complain about my cougar V6........runs awsome........but twofocused is correct.......the taurus block and 2.5 heads are incredible runners.........200hp is common for V6 guys to be making with that swap..........3.0 taurus engines are dirt cheap, readily available.......needless to say that is the next mode to the old V6.............I also agree with twofocused about the intense knowledge needed to do this swap......said it many times before and I'm sure I'll say it again, there is a reason there are only 3 of these cars that have been done........

i dunno, going FI will run me about $6000 for the full kit from Tom and thats the only FI kit i'd go with. and thats without tuning

gathering parts for the v6 its about $3000 parts in and the rest is labor which i can get help for free
