Do 00-07 side impact airbags really help save you?

Thinking about finding some seats from a focus that had side impact airbags and installing them in my 02 LX. Seems the wiring is just plug and play, just need the seats with airbags and the impact sensor.

Question is, do they really even help. All the information I can find is crash tests of the early Focus without side impact airbags which resulted in horrible ratings. Did anyone ever test the car with side impact airbags? Plus there is no side curtain airbag option, only the one in the seat.

Just really want to know if it will help me live or not

Yes they did, I'm just wondering if from a safety standpoint they will help or not?

Just watch some uTube crash tests..
The most interesting are Chinese car crash tests. Once you see one of those babies fold up.. You will be glad we have safety guidelines

I would say that no airbag of any type will ever 'save your life'. but there is evidence that they can reduce damages to your body from the effect of inertia.
Crashes that involve intrusion, an airbag does nothing. That is where crumple zones and side impact beams take over, to try and strengthen the passenger compartment.

I guess I wouldn't loose any sleep over not having side SRS.

After seeing the crash test ratings so side impact I now always look twice before entering an intersection. I guess if I find a good deal on matching interior seats with SIA I'll pick them up and hopefully never have to find out if they help or not.

I don't think it's as simple as just simply buying the seats with the sensor and wiring, that seems too easy.
You might need another airbag module somewhere too

According to the wiring diagram the airbag diagnostic monitor is the same for all, side impact just adds 8 wires to the harness.

Two wires to each airbag and two wires to each sensor.

So it would seem that it's a pretty dumb system, dumb as in there is 12v to one side of the sensor, if the switch in the sensor is impacted it carries the 12v to the diagnostic monitor which then sends 12v to the airbag to deploy.
