New Focus Owner & New Member

Hey all new 2012 Focus owner here. Been a while since I've owned a little compact car, and really loving it. Drove a full size pickup for the last 8 years and before that I had a '98 Honda Civic EX Manual that I really loved, but it was my high school / college car so of course I abused the shit out of it and it didn't last all that long. Had I taken care of it, I might still have it today.

I finally grew tired of driving my big ass pickup around urban Atlanta, and test drove a few hatchbacks. It came down to the Mazda 3 or the Ford Focus, and I went with the Focus. It had the features of a mid to full size sedan, the quality of the interior was nicer, and even though both cars were really fun to drive, the Focus had the feel of a much more expensive car.

The one thing I'm getting used to is the transmission. I'm not sure if I have the latest update or not (looking into that today) but I do notice some weirdness from time to time. I've found that if I'm in "D" and I want to accelerate around someone, there is a good bit of lag before it really gets going. Part of it I think is that most of the Focus' power resides in the 4-6k rpm range, and with the 6 speed auto, it has to sometimes drop two gears to really start pulling. I have the sport package, so it's just a matter of going into sport mode and fondling the rocker switch if I really want to control the shifts, but I'd like a quicker response in standard drive.

That is really a city driving issue though. I've found that out on the open road, driving with the rocker switch is a blast. This is from a little trip I took this weekend in the N. Georgia mountains. (I survived despite the wet weather and having a little too much fun in the corners).

My transmission grew up, around 150 miles. Feels so much better now.
