From AB: "Is America's automotive love affair over?"

Didn't see this posted here, what do you think?

Is America's automotive love affair over?

I'm 33 and don't see getting around by bicycle or public transport as particularly practical. I rode BART and the bus when I was in college... I've had enough of sitting next to stinky, drunk-ass bums rambling about nothing in particular to last me a lifetime. I'll take my car, thanks.

The poll, at current, claims 55% of people agree that it's fading somewhat. I'm not sure how anyone can substantiate that percentage though. Auto sales are higher this year than last, though lower than 2001, according to: http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/pag...tml#autosalesA

How many people do you know who turn their head and follow a new Camaro, Mustang or Challenger as it drives by, possible a break in conversation and moment of silence? (I know I do)

If the poll is correct then it would also mean, or I take it to mean, that with the implementation of 'social networking' computer based programs in everything nowdays, people just don't see a need to get out and visit friends/family/dad in prison/grandma in the hospital/the bank to cash a check anymore. Which also means our priorities and dependencies are all screwed up. Human interaction is at an all time low and falling. Soon "hello" will be replaced by "do you FaceBook" (moreso than already).

I for one am praying for next December ...

If I lived in a big city where public transportation was more convenient, I would take advantage of it and keep the miles down on my car. For those of us living in the suburbs that's not easily done. This country is far too large to give up our dependency on cars.

Yeah, the commentary hit on that. As an island country, there is only so much space and I guess they've hit critical.

I just can't see being more interested in things like a smart phone and what's happening on Facebook (and bumming rides off mom and dad) than getting a car. Getting a car and a driver's license was a HUGE moment in my life, the idea that some of today's kids give the notion of getting their own car a shrug and a "meh" is weird.

Our public transportation system in Omaha is garbage. Just terrible. It doesn't even run out to my job, which is in an outdoor mall type thing, not in the middle of nowhere...

I do find it interesting though...my brother (turning 18 on November 18th) has very little interest in getting a car...or working for that matter. I had a job the month after I turned 16 and bought my first car a year later. I worked 20+ hours a week all through HS and still graduated with honors. He works <10 hours a week, owns no car, etc etc. Maybe it has something to do with the work ethic? Being the second born? IDK. All I know is he's certainly not driving my car and it's very rare for me to give him a ride anywhere.

I can only hope that it's fading so that there would be less phonies, yuppies, ninnies and such getting in my way out there (I'm half-kidding... but only half). Sadly, I HIGHLY doubt that it's the case. But PLEASE by all means let them all take trains, buses, and bicycles so that I don't have to deal with indecisive and inattentive dunderheads!

I maybe one of the older 'Fanboys' out here, but that's because I do have pride in my car. Always have, mainly because I see it as an extension of myself. Sadly people these days see cars as only a means to get them from point A to point B.

Here was my first favorite: 1988 Mazda 323 GTX 16-Valve, DOHC, AWD, Turbo, 5-speed
http://thegarageblog.com/garage/forg...mazda-323-gtx/

Was having fun then and having fun now!!!
