2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv

Want to give yourself a headache? Go out and shop for a new compact sedan with the stipulation that it must have seating for up to five passengers and a highway EPA fuel economy rating in the high-30-mpg range or better. You won't have to look hard, because it seems nearly every automaker is jumping into an already crowded segment and delivering this type of vehicle. Without much effort, we can alphabetically list the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla. Spend a bit more time, and the list opens up even wider.

Sticker prices, fuel economy numbers and warranty terms are objective and indubitable. Driving dynamics, styling and passenger comfort, in sharp contrast, are subjective. To differentiate itself from the crowd, and win consumers over on both fronts, Mazda has worked hard to deliver a competitive compact that is objectively frugal and subjectively stylish and fun to drive.

Enter the new 2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv.

Fitted with a new high-compression engine and offered with two new transmissions, the latest of the Mazda's energy-efficient variants sounds impressive on paper - but so do most redesigned cars at first glance. We recently spent a day in Southern California putting the updated Mazda3 Skyactiv through its paces to determine if the Japanese automaker has really provided us with something revolutionary, or just another round of marketing hype.Continue reading 2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv.

According to the commercials, the Mazda3 Skyactive gets 40mpg. That's rather impressive to me.

Yeah, the auto does that.

What really impresses me, is that they went with a dual clutch setup, like the Focus. But, instead of having the low speed shaking issue, they paired it with a small traditional torque converter for speeds under 5mph.

They also reduced that grin a bit... not enough though.

I think it's a great alternative to the 2012 Focus. Reasonably priced, standard rear disc brakes, alloy wheels, and stock "sport-tuned" suspension. I think the subtle redesign does a good job of toning down the smiley face. The black color option almost eliminates it too if it really bothers you. Mazda was a little late to the fuel economy party, but personally I'll be happy to own something that gets more than 26 mpg for a change... :-P

Out of all of the competitors for the Focus, I consider this to be the most worthy.
Whether or not the next MS3 will be compete with the Focus ST is yet to be seen.

^News on the Mazda boards is that they might possibly either drop the MS3 or bring back the MS6 in some variant. (just rumours at this point) I also heard it's possible that the MS3 will be fitted with a turbo 2.5 with AWD but probably not because the market is saturated in that area. (again just rumours)

Either way I think the real question is will the ST be able to compete with the MS3?
2012 ST: 247 HP - 265 torques - 3000-3100 lbs (est.)
2010 MS3: 263 HP - 280 torques - 3200 lbs.

You also have to take into consideration the anti torque steer measures Ford has done on the Focus. And, whether or not torque vectoring control and the other handling upgrades will be able to compete with the MS3's LSD. The MS3 has reportedly had issues with torque steer, so it should be interesting.

I never experienced the massive amounts of torque steer when I drove my MS3. Of course I wasn't launching at every stop light either.

Mazda has torque and HP limited in 1st and 2nd gear anyway so that plus the LSD made it just fine, in my opinion. The ST will have no LSD so it sounds like they are relying completely on electronic measures (electric power steering control, etc) to control torque steer, this is a recipe for disaster.

MS3 - LSD + programming
ST - Programming

Ford has been testing the ST for a very long time, I'm sure it'll be fine.

The only issue I can see is: more features, more to go wrong. And that's absolutely true of the ST.
