OMG - went to pick up my new ford focus sel today

Went to pick up my Ford Focus SEL today.

Everything looked fine then I paid for it. On final inspection after payment I noticed weird discoloration on the inside ceiling fabric - the salesman told me they would try to get it out.. TRY!!! WTH.

Then I inspected the outside - small scratches on one corner - no big deal they should be able to buff it out BUT one of the rear lights was loose and not fitted properly ARG.

I left with a freakin' ford ranger courtesy - I WANT MY FOCUS!!!

Umm.. I would have been telling them to get me another car.

No way would I pay for a BRAND NEW car that has scratches and interior damage. No way in hell.

I really wonder why anyone would buy a first run '12 given all the quality problems that have surfaced lately. People here say that we only hear about the troublesome cars, but we hear about a lot of frustrating problems. Ford needs to get their quality control in line on this car because some of this shit is frankly embarrassing.

Some people complain about the Fusion being built in Mexico. The 2010 Fusion I traded for the 2012 Focus was one of the best built cars I have owned.

The 2012 Focus doesn't live up to Fusion's build quality yet....hopefully it will get there.

A good bit of the small scratches and interior stains comes from transit. In the 10 years I worked for a dealership as the inventory manager you would not believe some of the stuff that came in messed up. Cargo vans with condoms and beer bottles in them. We had an '04 Cobra come in and the whole passenger side had been repainted, totally didn't match. No record in transit that it had been fixed. Food left in new cars. The people that work at the rail heads definitely don't care I can tell you that.

To be fair, we hear the horror stories because people are coming here looking for help. You don't hear about all of the people that have cars with no problems.

Even still, the first model year on pretty much every Ford is buggy. It is like they launch a model a year before it is actually ready.

It also doesn't help that the build quality standards on this side of the pond aren't the same as those in Europe.

That is completely unacceptable. I would demand a NEW replacement. I'm really surprised to hear more and more stories like this. Is the Focus at least transported with the protective white panel film and wheel caps? A lot of manufacturers do this to prevent crap like this from happening. Even if the abuse takes place on the dealership end they shouldn't tamper with the protective stuff until the sale is finalized!

The cars at my dealership come fresh like that from the port of Delaware. White panel film, foam bump stops for the suspension, bagged floor mats, nylon/cotton wheel caps to protect the alloy wheels, protective (fake) windshield wipers, and the computer set to "transport mode" to prevent engine abuse and such. I've seen Toyotas and Subarus be treated similarly. Maybe they're starting to cut back on it to save money?

Bottom line, if you're paying a "destination fee" it damn well better be flawless and brand new. Do not settle for anything less!

Up here in Rip-off land we get dinged more than $1500 in fees just for the delivery when buying a new car.

For that price the car should bee 100% brand new condition. I would refuse any brand new car that I'm paying more to be delivered than what my first car costed me if it was any less then perfect shape.

I would tell them to keep the car and find you a replacement

Eff'in the first 3 months payments are just the cost of getting the car to the dealership..

What a rip.

No, it has to do with letting normal people drive the car over a much greater distance in a much wider range of situations and conditions. ALL cars are like this. Most other manufacturers use a combination of old platforms with proven parts. (So it's really not that new of a car)

The cost of getting the car to you is out of YOUR pocket, don't ever forget that when they try to give you a dinged up car.
