Extra Charge For Some Metallic Colors?

Looking at a lovely blue candy focus yesterday, my girlfriend brought an unfortunate cost to my attention. A nasty extra $300 charge on the window list for paint color. A further investigation around the lot showed this also applies to Red Candy and White Platinum. I didn't understand this and it was not previously brought to my attention. Even the build and price on the Canadian Ford website doesn't make this fact obvious. If you pick one of said colors on the options page the price total doesn't go up as it would when you click on various options. Not until you get to the final page do they tack this extra cost on which can be easily missed.

Though maybe I could understand an extra charge for metallic colors, I was surprised to find this extra charge does not also apply to tuxedo black.

Does anyone know the reasoning for this extra color charge?

The White Platinum is a metalic tri coat, there is another white that is not.

Both of the candy colors have a tinted clear coat, hence the term "candy". Hot Rodders have been doing candy paint jobs for ever.

The added cost is because it is a process out of the norm.

FWIW, on the Ford web page the second thing you select after the model is color and the added cost pops up immediately.

BTW, most manufactures have special colors that are an added cost.

I have a Candy Blue SEL 5dr.

That's a bargain for triple coat and tinted clear- really. Most factory paint jobs are one coat, and most are uni-prime where the primer is not dried before the paint is sprayed on. It doesn't take much for little primer color dots to start appearing all over the car from road debris. With a triple coat paint job- you'll be able to use a cutting wax to remove light scrapes and rock chips. Well worth $300 if you care about the appearance of the paint.

Actually, in his post he talks about the Ford CANADA website. I don't understand why they do this, but on the Canada website, it DOES NOT add the extra cost for the paint.

I found this annoying too, as I first found out about this additional cost at the dealership.

Also, on the Ford USA website, when you move your mouse over a colour, it will tell you the name, and show you the additional cost (if any). Much better way to do it.
