Which Focus?

Hi all, Im looking at selling my Escort GTi and getting a focus..

Looking at around a 02/03 reg.
Im thinking ST170, as I like the look also the power to go with it...but...would they be full of issues?

Would I be better in getting a 2.0l focus (not ST) and sticking multispokes on it and lowering slightly so I have a similar focus looking to a ST but without the insurance

What are the 02/03 years like? Are they starting to rust anywhere? Any common issues to look for?

Would I be better getting a ST or a 2.0l as mentioned above? why?

I guess I'd find the best that's within your price range. ST's do have quirks moreso than problems; and I say that because the internet world has a pretty good handle on how to fix most of them with ease and none are really that bad. ... but every car has quirks.

Honestly I'd go for a base 2.0 vs the ST simply from the cost standpoint. Insurance, MOT, etc will all be higher on a ST, and you guys pay a lot more than we do to drive and it isn't getting any cheaper.

But then something like the RS would be just the opposite. It's more of an investment than a traditional car being they are rare and can fetch a good price later on in life. So the higher MOT and insurance may equal out in the end ... but then you're scared to drive it because of mileage depreciation.

I guess in the end all of them are good cars, decently reliable and don't cost a ton to repair if things go awry.

If you can find a good low mileage ST170 that would be nice. But yeah ... if you can't and they are as rare as finding good SVTs here in the States. Then I would go with your backup plan you posted. Getting the 2.0 (non ST version) and decking it out to the ST styling. I think it would still look good.

But if the insurance is not that big of a difference ... I would opt out for the ST model. I don't believe you would regret it.

If you haven't already, try asking over at:

They're more likely to have the exact information you are looking for, since this forum is mainly geared towards the North American models.
