Trim Models for 2010 Ford Focus

My mother is interested in trading in her 2003 Ford Taurus SES for a smaller car (she's petite). The Ford Focus and Mazda3 (but only the 2009 model) caught her eye. I'm tasked with helping her find the next car and she hates to shop. Don't kill me Ford Focus lovers, but the only 2010 used Ford Focus cars I've seen at dealers/resellers have very, very, very basic looking interiors. Does one of the 2010 Ford Focus trims, like the SES or SEL offer an upgraded interior? I'm trying to do as much research as possible online so we know what we're looking for before we show up on the lot. I would really appreciate your direction on how to approach this. She is in the Silverdale, Washington area and I'm not -- so would like her to have a car that is both fun to drive, safe, and 100% reliable. She's ready to buy right now and I'm feeling pressured. FYI the only other cars she has liked are a Hyundai Elantra and a Kia Forte (again, think small). Can't find any Mazda3's in the area for her to try - the only one we saw was a 2010 model and apparently they changed styles so it's a bigger car. She's looking for small and sporty (not your grandmother's car). Thanks!

Upgraded Trim Description - the Interior "Feel" -

Thanks for the note. Can you give me an idea of what the upgraded interior-feel features are? The only Focus I've been in with my mother was a gorgeous exterior blue color but the interior felt like hard plastic - sort of a Soviet feel. The steering wheel struck me as being small and it just felt spartan. (It would be great for a dusty place like Nome, Alaska.)

Do the upgraded interiors on the SEL and SES mean that it has a nicer dashboard, different steering wheel, different shift column features (can't recall if there was a coffee cup holder), upgraded upholstery features?

When I look online (like http://www.edmunds.com/ford/focus/2010/) for the feature comparison it gives details like bluetooth or satellite radio...but they don't really speak to the interior "feel". I assume that an SEL is "better" than an SES because it costs more...and wonder if you can tell a difference when you sit in the two different interiors (spartan or sumptuous?).

If you were buying your mother a "Ford Focus type" sized late-model used vehicle that was safe, great on gas, and good looking on the outside and inside, what would you choose?

leather seats (heated), leather steering wheel, leather door inserts. dash and center console have a silver color instead of paint to match dash color.

i went with the SES because the interior is really nice and sporty outside

Thanks! That gives me a great idea of the difference and I'll "focus" on looking at the SES version of the Focus. Do you know if they change much between years? I'm finding that the outside styling and length does, which is an issue for me to keep track of because Mom will find one to be the right size and the next one she tries is too big. They all look the same to me and since they don't stamp the product year on the outside, a Focus is a Focus is a Focus to me. ....and I hate car shopping.

I love my 09' SES. Also good to see another Alaskan here on the forums. Welcome.

Saw your photos - that is sharp looking. I was surprised to see the fog lights - thought the car salesman had told me the Focus doesn't come with foglights. That must just be the SE model. Appreciate your input.

All 2010 and 2011 Foci have ABS and Traction Control. With SES or SEL, you'll get cruise, leather wrapped steering wheel and fogs for sure. The SES has 'Sport cloth' seats or a leather upgrade, while all SEL's have leather.

2008-09 SES didn't get the black out trim nor the 17" wheels and some other goodies.

Other good site to compare cars is Autotrader dot com, Look over the threads in the 2011-08 forums, too.

Best way to tell model year is the VIN #, 10th digit. 8, 9, A, and B for each year 08-11.

With car shopping, I like to look, but hate to haggle about $$$.

Which versions have those cool looking gills on the side behind the front wheels? I see them on some but not others. I have a 2009 SES with Sync and a spoiler but no gills.
