TN Court: Person who left keys in car responsible when it gets stolen

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/14/t...hen-it-gets-s/

A suit was brought against a man who left his keys in his car, which was promptly stolen and then collided with another vehicle causing injuries to three passengers. Initially, the lawsuit was filed against the city of Murfreesboro and its police department– however, that suit was dismissed by the Tennessee Court of Appeals. But the court is allowing the suit against the owners of the vehicle to continue.

That will hopefully teach a valuable lesson, here. If You leave Your keys in You car and it gets stolen good luck finding an insurance company that will cover "Owner assisted theft".

Seriously, a persons' car is usually the number 2 most expensive thing they will ever buy. Why the hell would anyone trust strangers with that much money? Sounds like a pretty solid case in favor of personal responsibility, to Me.

Keep Your keys in Your pocket and You won't get sued for someone stealing Your car with Your help and killing someone. Easy fix.

I think there's no question that it's idiotic to leave your car unattended with keys in ignition. BUT I think it's quite a stretch to make the owner liable for any criminal charges after said vehicle has been stolen. By that logic I could steal an unattended cop car, run several people over, crash it into an elementary school, and come out completely innocent from the whole ordeal.

Seriously, wtf is wrong with this country? What happened to something called accountability? Why is it so difficult to make criminals fully accountable for their actions? Nope, can't have that... too much common sense.

Because if they didnt leave their keys in the ignition to begin with, it more than likely never would have been stolen.... Therefore, theoretically, no one would have been hurt and no law suit. (which means this thread would never exist :O deep!)

I'm not buying the negligence argument either. That's like going to a guitar store, picking up an electric guitar, and bashing someone over the head with it. By your logic the store should be held accountable for leaving those guitars out. Cars aren't any more designed to harm/kill people than a simple guitar is... yet they both can!

Regardless of whether something potentially harmful is accessible to you or not, the moral decisions you made for the acts that followed is something even a child can distinguish. This is just shoddy lawmaking at its finest.

PS: If someone really wants to steal your car, they can. Regardless of whether the keys are in the ignition. At the rate which these laws are going, don't be surprised if you're held accountable for someone's death because you didn't have your car parked inside a reinforced garage, battery unplugged, and The Club installed on your steering wheel.
