DSM related question( I know there's a few dsmers on here)

my friend has a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI. it developed a problem a few months ago that even shops can't figure out. sometimes when just cruising. it will start to jump around the place and it feels like you're driving in an earthquake. i experienced it twice. When we stopped to look, we saw nothing loose and jumped back in it and it was gone. it did it about 5 minutes later taking it home. a local transmission shop said it was the transfer case and a shaft that goes between the tc and tranny and replaced them both. But it's doing the same exact thing again and they said there's nothing wrong. This is his only car, it's mildly modded but also his DD and he's getting really upset since he loves the car. Anyone have any Ideas? it does have a really bad CV axle but I don't know if a bad CV axle would go that far. I don't know anything to tell him so I hope someone has an idea.
thanks

I did notice when we parked it that I smelt heat coming from the front driver side which has the bad CV axel. Some of the symptoms sound like a bad wheel bearing but I've never been in a car that needed one so I don't know if they randomly hop

Check your carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft.
