Broken Focus

Hi fellas,

I recently bought a bog standard 2001 Focus with a 1.4 engine. Since I got it, it has run pretty rough, it had a dead spot at top of accelerator, it smokes quite a lot when cold, and seems to misfire most of the time.
While trying to determine what is wrong with it, I was pulling out leads to see where the misfire was and pulling out the lead closest to drivers side ( I'm in the UK ) made no difference to the engine, there doesn't seem to be a spark coming down that lead. So I replaced the HT leads and coil pack, not with OE, but with brand new parts all the same, I also replaced the plugs for good measure.
The problem did not go away, infact I would say it's actually worse now, there's a horrible rattle around 3000rpm which turns into a shudder by 4000rpm, that wasn't there yesterday ...
I know the obvious solution would be to take it to a garage, so they can hook it up to a diganositcs machine, however I'd like to try and avoid that, not least of all because of expense.
I'm also aware that my seals have probably failed, I'm interested in what could be wrong with this electronic ignition system, or could broken mechanical parts cause this ignition system to fail ??
I'd like to hear some suggestions, things that could make a brand new ignition system fail ...
I'm pretty competent with mechanics, though this whole electronic everything is new to me, so before spouting abbreviations and acronyms, you should be aware that I have no clue what any of that stuff is, when I ordered the coil pack I called it a distributor !!
So talk in mkIII escort terms and tell me what it's called all these years later :)

PS. If it will help, I can post audio, and visual material of whatever you like ...

I done plugs and wires already, so it's not that. I did try taking off the air filter entirely, just for a minute to see if there was a difference, sadly there is not.
Where can I find the pcv, and intake sensors ??
reckon I found throttle body for myself

This afternoon, I removed everything and started again, the misfire is no longer there, guess a lead must not have been connected properly, or a bad connection to coil ( cleaned connections to coil ). Now I have a new problem, I think the cylinder it's firing now is ruined, it's smoking a lot, and has a very strange rattle at certain ranges on the throttle ...

The engine still runs rough at idle though, and it seems to have gotten much louder ... and this rattle cannot be heard ( even when you hit the rev limiter ) when the car is not in motion ...

Thanks for your time ...

Start with a compression test on each cylinder. That might give you a little insight on what is going on. Not sure which scanner will work on yours, however.

Well if one cylinder was not firing for a while, or was misfiring, it can build up a lot of crud, carbon, and oil in there that will burn up once it starts firing.

Oil: gray smoke, does not dissipate easily
Carbon: white smoke, does not dissipate much
Water: steam, white, dissipates within a few feet from the vehicle.

I would expect carbon and oil smoke from a cylinder that has been not firing for a while. It should go away as long as everything else is working correctly. I say, run it, and give it a week or so. You might also have some oil in the exhaust from this- but all that should burn off within a couple of weeks.
