So, what this means is that the first MY 2000 Foci delivered in 1999 are starting to lose their coverage under the 10-year condition. Those owning 2001s should start to take notice of this at about this time next year.

In reality, though, anyone who owns a 2000 Focus who hasn't had a broken spring yet shouldn't be too worried about it overall. It was a nice program for those of us who broke a spring, but it doesn't seem to be so widespread that massive amounts of people are now going to be forking out cash for replacement springs.

This program is active in Canada as well

For those reading this who live in Canada who are wondering if this program is in effect here as well, I can confirm that it is. I drive a 2002 Ford Focus wagon, and a couple of days ago I started hearing a "thung" sound whenever I turned the steering wheel sharply. It did not affect steering nor did it affect the performance of the car. Visual inspection of the wheel wells showed that the plastic cover on the front coil springs were worn and had come loose, and the metal springs had corroded and you could see where they had broken. I read about the 03M02 program here and wrote down the VIN of my car in case I was asked for it. I took the car to my local Ford dealer, and although he didn't ask for my VIN number (he may have already had it on file from my last visit) he confirmed that my vehicle was covered by the "extended coverage" for this issue. He mentioned that sometimes the sway bars are difficult to remove and may need to be replaced, and he gave me an estimate of $165.00 CDN to replace them. Thankfully he didn't have to replace the sway bars so I didn't have to debate him on this point. I kinda understand his point in that the sway bars aren't covered by the extended coverage, but then again why should I pay if removing the sway bars is a mandatory step in replacing coil springs that have extended coverage because of a known issue? Bottom line, both front coil springs were replaced free of charge and done before lunchtime. Nice work Ford!

Andy
